The records of the Social Functions Committee of North Carolina State University (earlier North Carolina State College) span from 1925 to 1971. There is an additional folder of undated material in the collection. The collection primarily contains the minutes of the Social Functions Committee, as well as forms and information regarding chaperones, rental of locations and supplies, policies regarding social functions associated with the University, and correspondence related to said functions. Information relating to the Interfraternity Council and various fraternal and social organizations on campus can be found in this collection. A significant focus lies in expectations for student conduct and alcohol use at campus-related events. Though the included information spans from 1925 to 1971, there are few documents pertaining to the years 1925 to 1947. A Social Functions committee apparently existed at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in 1924-1925. The purpose of the Social Functions Committee was to establish codes of conduct for and organize social functions affiliated with the University and hosted by various student organizations. Materials range in date from 1933 to 1994. The Course of Study Committe was established at North Carolina State College (later, University) in or before 1934 to advise and review additions, deletions, and revisions to undergraduate courses and curricula. In 1953, the committee was renamed the College Curriculum Committe, and sometime thereafter become the University Courses and Curricula Committee. The records of the North Carolina State University Library Committee span from 1934 to 1998 and include the records of the Library Building Committee, a subcommittee of the Library Committee formed to oversee the construction of additional library facilities in the 1960s. Included in the collection are the minutes of the committee, fund allocations, correspondence from various departments and information on library policy. Documents relating to construction in the 1960s span from 1965 to 1967 and include bound proposals for the construction and use of the facility. Documents are arranged chronologically, with building committee records following full committee records. The North Carolina State University (North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, 1887-1917; North Carolina State College, 1917-1965) Library Committee was first formed in 1908. English professors, Thomas P. Harrison and George Summey were appointed as co-chairs of the library committee. The role of the committee was to contact faculty for recommendations of titles to be added to the library collection. The role of the library committee has expanded since this time and, though it still advises on accessions, it also handles the finnancial responsibilities of the library, oftentimes advocating for more facility resources and making descisions on library policies. As of 2012, the University Library Committee (also referred to as the University Standing Committee on Library) advises the Provost and the Director of Libraries on the fomulation of library policy in relationship to development of resources, the allocation of book funds, the allocation of library space and the general development of library service to the University. The North Carolina State University, Division of Academic and Student Affairs, Department of Performing Arts and Technology Records contain office files, audio recordings of various performances made by groups associated with the Music Department, programs from performances, news releases and newspaper clippings, and files pertaining to the Raleigh Chamber Music Guild. Materials range in date from 1901 to 2023. The Department of Music provided educational and performance opportunities for student and community participants through a variety of musical experiences and academic courses. The records of North Carolina State University's Counseling Center contain correspondence, notices, brochures and reports documenting the activities of the center. The center produced yearly Advisers Handbooks as a resource for faculty serving as academic or vocational advisers to students. Some handbooks have been annotated by Counseling Center staff including William Weston and Murray Downs. Notices and brochures contained in these records pertain to student services offered by the center. The Counseling Center's offices were originally located in Holladay Hall until 1964 when they were moved to 207 Peele Hall. The Center moved in 1976 to a location at 200 Harris Hall. Materials in this collection range in date from 1935 until 1996. The North Carolina State College (later University) Counseling Center was originally located in Holladay Hall and was alternately called the Department of Counseling. Through the early days of the center's existence, the counseling center offered services for pre-college and enrolled students including entrance testing guidance, orientation events, financial aid assistance, vocational and educational guidance, social and personal guidance and special assistance for disabled, academically challenged and gifted students. In the early 1950s, the center promoted the idea of having health professionals on staff at the College. By the 1970s, a Health Center was established as a separate entity from the Counseling Center. As of 2013, the Counseling Center operates as an arm of the Student Health Center and focuses on personal, academic and vocational guidance for students. Less

The records document the activities of the office and its committees from 1930 to 2000. The North Carolina State University Department of Student Development worked to help college students become competent as adults. This included helping students become more ethical, responsible, enthusiastic about their involvement in human affairs, and optimistic about their future. In addition, the department had a special interest and responsibility in helping students with cultural understanding relating to ethnicity. The records document the activities of the office from 1903 to 1989. From 1908 to 1974, the office of Religious Affairs was nearly synonymous with the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), as the records indicate. Hence, the collection also includes the records of the Danforth Chapel from 1955 to 1976, the International Student Center from 1955 to 1965, and the Self-Help Bureau from 1932 to 1941. The Office of Religious Affairs grew out of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) and the leadership of Edward S. King, who served North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) through the YMCA from 1919 to 1955. The campus branch of the YMCA was established in 1889 and was the site of the following activities and events: regular Sunday services; Bible study classes; a published montly paper; a handbook for freshmen and prospective students; speakers and discussion groups; a game room for students; a barbershop; and the Self-Help Bureau, which helped students secure employment while in college. They also include records of N. C. State’s Air Science and Tactics Department and the Military Science and Tactics Department. The North Carolina State University’s Reserve Officer’s Training Corp (ROTC) is a group of four campus programs, the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps which train officers of the United State armed forces in basic military and officer training. The collection includes records of the Student Media Board, 1928-2008, the Agromeck office from 1909 to 2011, the Technician office from 1939 to 2011, the WKNC Radio Station from 1922 to 2006, the Windhover from 1928 to 2013, the Nubian Message from 2007 to 2009, and a small number of records, 1926-2022, from other publications. The Student Media Authority at North Carolina State University oversees creation of campus student publications at North Carolina State University, which include a yearbook, a daily newspaper, literary magazine, and African American student newspaper. It also oversees the student radio station, WKNC, and student television station, Wolf TV. The Publications Board was formed at North Carolina State College in or before 1933 to oversee creation of student publications. By 1937, it included representatives from student publications such as the Agromeck, Technician, Wataugan, Southern Engineer, and Agriculturist. By the late 1940s, it also included representatives from the student radio station WVWP. In the following decades, the organization continued to oversee the finances and leadership of student publications at North Carolina State University. It underwent various name changes, becoming known as the Student Media Board by the mid-2000s. As of 2010, Student Media is part of the Division of Student Affairs and is based in Witherspoon Student Center. It includes 220 paid and volunteer student positions. Less

The bulk of the records come from different committees and include materials on honorary degrees, the search for a new chancellor, Board of Trustees, Chancellor's Liasion, elections, budget, and student affairs. Also included are materials on the selection of outstanding teachers and Watauga Medal recepients, retention of African American students, Founders Day events, and other administrative functions of the Faculty Senate. The first Faculty Council meetings were held in 1923, and the Council remained in place as an ad hoc advisory board to the then College President.
