English
The North Carolina State University’s Reserve Officer’s Training Corp (ROTC) is a group of four programs provided on NC State University’s campus for training officers of the United States armed forces. The four ROTC units are the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps and all instruct NC State University students in basic military training and officer training. The programs are designed to improve students’ physical abilities and hone their leadership skills while still attending college. The ROTC programs may provide scholarships for applicants in return for active military service after graduating college.
The Army and Air Force ROTC programs are in conjunction with their own corresponding Military Science Department at NC State University, while the Naval ROTC is in conjunction with the Naval Science Department. These departments are also represented in this collection.
Coursework in military science was added to the curricula of North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (the original name of North Carolina State University) in 1894, during the administration of its first president, Alexander Q. Holladay. Participation in military drills each week was compulsory for the entire student body, which at the time was exclusively male. ROTC programs were first established on campus during World War I, as the College prepared to provide intensive military instruction. The College held a long-standing military tradition throughout many wars, and ROTC service was compulsory at NC State University until November 1964.
The North Carolina State University, Division of Student Affairs, Reserve Officers' Training Corps Records, 1904-2002, contains scrapbooks, memoranda, pamphlets, correspondences, newsletters, instruction books, newsclippings, and other administrative files relating to the activities and events of the campus ROTC program’s Air Force, Army, and Navy branches.
