Standards Available at the NC State University Libraries

This page summarizes access for the complete standard sets the NC State University Libraries buys or has free access to.

The NC State University Libraries buys online access to current and active standards from ASME and UL through the IHS Engineering Workbench database. Note that you will need to create an individual account with your NC State email address in order to use this database. IHS instructions can be found here

Withdrawn or inactive standards and standards from other organizations will not be available online via IHS Engineering Workbench (you will see purchase prices for them). They can be ordered individually, at no cost to the patron, via the Standards form in Tripsaver (this service available only to current NC State faculty, staff, students, and university affiliates). Several other standards sets listed below are available in print in the various NC State University Libraries.

  • Access to European-adopted IEC and ISO standards issued by AENOR (Spanish Association for Standardization and Certification).
  • A European adopted ISO or IEC standard is an ISO or IEC standard that has been adopted in full by the European Union, specifically the European Commission. Once this adoption takes place the ISO is now an EN ISO and the two documents are identical in every way with the addition of a National foreword/cover page.
  • The standard number for these will begin with "UNE."  For example, UNE-EN ISO 105-Z07:1999 is equivalent to ISO 105-Z07:1995.  Similarly, UNE-EN 60601-1-2:2015 is equivalent to IEC 60601-1-2:2014.  Since European adoption occurs after the original IEC or ISO standard is issued, the year in the standard number may not be the same even though the standard itself is identical.
Military Standards and Specifications - MIL-STDS or MIL-SPECS
  • Note: not all standards have been cleared for public release
National Information Standards Organization - NISO
See below for ISO. NISO ≠ ISO.

ISO Standards
The NC State University Libraries does not buy access to all ISO documents, online or in print. There are, however, over 2000 books and documents related to ISO standards as well as approximately 315 items more tightly focused on ISO standards themselves in the collection.  Several hundred ISO and ISO/IEC standards are also publicly available through the ISO website.  We also have access to European-adopted ISO standards via our ASTM Compass subscription (see above table for more details).

Other standards books and documents
There are over 10,000 books, documents and other materials in the Libraries relating to standards.
