This collection contains more than 100 drawings of the Physical Science Building, also known as Kenan Labs, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The drawings were created by the architectural firm Ballard, McKim and Sawyer, AIA in 1968. The drawings are marked "as built." The architectural firm once known as Ballard, McKim and Sawyer, AIA, is known as BMS Architects, PC, as of 2008. The company has been based in Wilmington, North Carolina. The firm was founded in 1955 by Herbert McKim and Frank Ballard. Bob Sawyer joined in 1959. It became a leading firm in eastern North Carolina, known for experience in coastal architecture as well as in educational facilities from elementary through post secondary work. Founded originally as a partnership, the firm underwent a transition to a professional corporation in 1988. Herbert Pope McKim was born on January 10, 1928, in Robersonville, North Carolina. He received a degree in architecture from North Carolina State College in 1950, and he first worked with Lesley N. Boney Architects in Wilmington, North Carolina. The Banks Talley Papers consists of personal and professional papers of Dr. Banks C. Talley, Jr. This collection contains correspondence, diaries, newspaper clippings, photographs, agendas, and other documents dated from 1922-2012, though the bulk of the materials are from 1969-1983. The professional papers are from Dr. Talley's position as Dean of Students and Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs at NC State University, and from his position as executive assistant to North Carolina Governor Jim Hunt. Included are two diaries kept by Talley during the time that he worked for the governor. Banks C. Talley, Jr., 1926-2017, was born in Bennettsville, South Carolina, in 1926. After military service in World War II, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned a B.A. in history (1950), an M.A. (1956), and a Ph.D in education (1966). In 1951 he became assistant dean of students at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University). He later served as coordinator and director of student activities, associate dean and dean of student affairs, and finally vice chancellor for student affairs, beginning in 1974. Dr. Talley took a leave of absence from N.C. State from 1977-1978 to serve as the executive assistant to North Carolina Governor Jim Hunt. Less

The Barbara Sherman Papers contains a wide variety of materials that document her career as a professor, lecturer, and clinician of veterinary medicine at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Included are correspondence, lectures and writings, clinical reports, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, raw data from clinical trials and studies, and other materials. The collection provides information on Dr. Sherman's career as an instructor at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine, public speaker at veterinary conferences, and clinician in the field of companion animal behavior. Barbara Sherman was a professor at North Carolina State University's College of Veterinary Medicine from 1984 until her retirement in 2018. She previously taught at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and practiced veterinary medicine at her clinic in Southern Pines and Cary, North Carolina. Her clinical research focused on anxiety, fear, and aggression in companion animals. Less

The Ben Jennings Papers about Lee Smith contain correspondence, newspaper clippings, articles, event posters and flyers, class room notes, lectures, writings, and audio and visual items related to published author Lee Smith. Materials are dated from 1982 to 2007. Ben Jennings was associate professor at Virginia Highlands Community College where he taught film appreciation and American literature. He was also served on the Arts Advisory Committee. This committee was charged with advising the vice president of Instruction and Student Services and the dean of the Division of Business, Humanities and Social Sciences, regarding matters pertaining to Virginia Highlands Community College's curricular and non-curricular programs and offerings in theater, music, films, literature, dance and visual arts. Jennings was a friend of Southern writer Lee Smith for thirty years, organized events to honor her, and taught a seminar about her writing career. Less

The Bernard P. Zeigler Papers, 1962-2017, consists of files containing technical reports and early journal articles from when Zeigler was a graduate student and assistant professor at the University of Michigan. It also includes files from unpublished books, as well as presentations and related materials. Bernard P. Zeigler is Professor Emeritus of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Arizona. In 1962, he received a B.S. in Engineering Physics from McGill University in Montreal, Canada, an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1964, and a Ph.D. in Computer/Communication Sciences from the University of Michigan in 1968. Zeigler is best known for his theoretical work concerning modeling and simulation performed according to general systems theory, and is well published in his field. He has held faculty appointments at the University of Michigan (1969-1975, 1980-1981), the Weizmann Institute in Israel (1975-1980), Wayne State University (1981-1984), The University of Arizona (1985-2010), and Arizona State University (2005-2008). While in Arizona, Zeigler served as Co-Director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Modeling and Simulation (ACIMS). He is currently affiliated with the Center of Excellence in Command, Control, Communications, Computing and Intelligence (C4I Center) at George Mason University and is also the Chief Scientist at RTSync Corp. The Bernard Unti Book and Ephemera Collection on Animal Studies contains books, pamphlets, ephemera, and material culture objects tied to the history of the kindness-to-animals ethic, organized animal protection, vegetarianism, anti-vivisection and related concerns. The majority of the collection is comprised of books with many dating to the 1800s and early 20th Century. Bernard Unti, Ph.D., is an animal rights and welfare advocate who served as Senior Policy Adviser and Special Assistant to the President and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) from 2004 to 2021. Unti was then hired as Senior Principal Strategist in Communications for the HSUS. Unti is the author of Protecting All Animals: A Fifty-Year History of The Humane Society of the United States (2004), which covers the history of the HSUS from its creation to the early twentieth century. Unti has also written a number of essays and articles on animal cruelty as a historical and contemporary issue. In addition to working for the HSUS and Humane Society International, he worked at the Animal Anti-Vivisection Society (AAVS) in various positions from 1985 to 1992, including the position of Executive Director. There are materials related to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), Unti's dissertation research, and his time as Senior Policy Adviser and Special Assistant to President and CEO of the HSUS, Wayne Pacelle. The collection also includes Unti's research into various animal rights issues and topics such as laboratory animals, trapping, hunting, cetacean protection, humane education, veganism, and vegetarianism. Bernard Unti, Ph.D., was employed as Senior Policy Adviser and Special Assistant to the President and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) from 2004 to 2021. The Bernie Reeves Intelligence and Security Collection consists of papers, books, periodicals, photographs, audiovisual materials and artifacts related to the Raleigh International Spy Conference and Bernie Reeves’ publishing ventures and research of espionage and national security. Bernie Reeves was a founder of the Spectator weekly magazine first published in Raleigh in 1978. In 1999, he founded Metro Magazine, a monthly magazine covering business, politics, entertainment and cultural issues in Raleigh and eastern North Carolina. In 2003, he founded the Raleigh International Spy Conference, an event that was held annually from 2003 to 2009 and again in 2011 and 2012. The conference featured notable speakers from the intelligence, security and publishing communities and each year focused on a specific aspect of security or espionage such as Al-Qaeda or the Cold War. These papers represent B. W. (Bertram Whittier) Wells's research interests, publications, and honors as well as Wells's personal life and pursuits, his first wife, Edna Metz Wells, his second wife, Maude Barnes Wells, and his household at Rockcliff Farm, a property on the Neuse River in North Carolina that Wells acquired before his retirement in 1954. In writing his biography of Wells, Prof. James R. Troyer amassed the majority of the materials comprising series 1 of these papers. Series 2 is composed of papers left behind by B. W. and Maude Barnes Wells at Rockcliff Farm, now part of the Falls Lake State Recreation Area in Wake Forest, North Carolina. A third series, Additional Artifacts and Books, has been added to the collection since the conclusion of an exhibit on Wells in 2007. Bertram Whittier Wells is most widely known for his study and preservation of North Carolina's natural environment. Wells headed North Carolina State College's (later North Carolina State University) Botany Department from 1919 to 1949 and remained on the faculty until 1954. One of the first to rightly be called an ecologist, he wrote on many topics: the insect galls of plants, the effects of salt on coastal vegetation, Bald Head Island, and the formation of the Carolina Bays. However, his most extensive work focused on savannah and pocosin vegetation. First published by the University of North Carolina Press in 1932, Wells's popular book, The Natural Gardens of North Carolina, remains in print. Wells also advocated for modern scientific instruction methods, including the teaching of evolution in the 1920s. During Wells's long retirement, he became seriously interested in painting. Less

The materials include the complete hard copy run of the journal Between the Species, 1984-1996. Between the Species was a quarterly peer-reviewed print journal that was published from 1984 to 1996 by the Schweitzer Center of the San Francisco Bay Institute/Congress of Cultures. It focused on philosophical issues related to animals and the animal-human relationship. It has transitioned to an electronic-only journal, which is published through the support of the Philosophy Department and Digital Commons at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. The Bill Baron Papers contain design sketches, photographs, architectural drawings, correspondence, and slides that relate to some of the graphic design, industrial design, and landscape architecture work that Bill Baron completed in the 1960s while he was a professor at the North Carolina State University School (now College) of Design. Work that is particulary well documented is Baron's design of the Tallywood Shopping Center sign and canopy in Fayetteville, and his design of the Aqua-Aid flotation device. The papers also relate to Baron's work on such notable projects as the North Carolina State Capital Plan, the Fayetteville Market Square, and the Whispering Pines Village. Baron worked on the Tallywood Shopping Center with landscape architect Richard Bell and architects MacMillan and MacMillan; on the North Carolina State Capital Plan with landscape architect Lewis Clarke; and on the Market Square development and Whispering Pines Village with landscape architect Richard Moore. Bill Baron was born in Chicago and studied Industrial Design at the University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign. Baron taught Industrial Design at North Carolina State University's School (now College) of Design in the 1960s, when the school was led by Dean Henry Kamphoefner. Baron is nationally recognized for his art, which has been displayed at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago and at the North Carolina Museum of Art. He is also an award-winning editorial cartoonist. Baron worked in New York City for 25 years, in a career devoted to product design, invention, and marketing. Less

The Bill Hansley Photographs, 1985-1990, contain 35mm negatives, 35mm slides, contact sheets, and 8x10 work prints related to events and students at North Carolina State University. These events include numerous football and basketball games as well as other sporting events such as gymnastics, fencing, soccer, and track and field. Many of the basketball games include images of Coach Jim Valvano. Other events include the North Carolina State Fair and various campus events for students. Also included are images depicting student life on campus. All photographs were taken for NC State University Student Media publications. Bill Hansley was a student at North Carolina State University from 1985-1990. While studying he worked as a photographer for two NC State University student publications, Technician and Agromeck. The Bobby J. Ward Research Collection on J. C. Raulston (1940-2010) is comprised of Ward’s research in preparation for his book, Chlorophyll in his Veins: J. C. Raulston, Horticultural Ambassador. The collection is organized alphabetically, which reflects Ward’s original arrangement. Types of materials include correspondence, articles, drafts, photographs, and personal papers. Some of Raulston’s papers have been arranged chronologically, as that is how Ward organized them for his research. Less

The Brian Shawcroft Papers, 1958-2017, contain drawings and other materials documenting the professional activities of modernist architect Brian Shawcroft and associated architecture firms Holloway-Reeves; MacMillan, MacMillan, Shawcroft & Thames; Environmental Planning Associates; Shawcroft-Taylor; and McKimmon Edwards Shawcroft Associates. The collection is arranged into five series: drawings, professional files, photographic materials, project records, and slides. Drawings include original drawings, reproductions, and CAD printouts of process (or design) drawings and construction documents such as site plans, additions, alterations, and remodeling plans. Professional files include a list of completed projects, reproductions of photographs of projects, and supplemental materials to projects, Shawcroft’s curriculum vitae, and awards. Photographic materials include black-and-white and color prints and photographs of projects. Most photographs were taken by Shawcroft. Brian Shawcroft, born in England in 1929, is a modernist architect. Shawcroft studied architecture at the South West Essex Technical College and School of Art in London from 1949 to 1953. In 1960, he received a Masters in Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Following this, he served as an associate professor and lecturer in architecture at the North Carolina State College's School of Design from 1960 to 1968. Shawcroft began practicing architecture professionally in 1954 and worked with various firms throughout his career. He is recognized for designing much of the modernist home inventory in the Research Triangle region from the 1970s to the late 1990s. In 1991 he was awarded the annual Henry Kamphoefner Prize by the American Institute of Architects-North Carolina Chapter for demonstrated excellence in the Modern Movement of architecture. This collection contains materials collected over the course of Brian W. Hollocks' career from the 1960s to 1980s. Included are numerous computer simulation manuals and user guides created through operational research conducted by the United Steel Companies in the United Kingdom, as well as instruction sheets, circuit boards, and a video cassette. Brian W. Hollocks is a retired Professor of Management Science and Information Systems at Bournemouth University and was the INTEL Chair in Computer-Supported Co-operation. He is a Chartered (Mechanical) Engineer and holds a Ph.D. in Management Science from Southampton University. He taught and researched on simulation, computer-supported cooperative work, knowledge management, and artificial intelligence. Before his career in academia, Hollocks worked in business and industry, primarily in operational research and software development and marketing. Less

The Bruce J. Zobel Papers contain diaries, correspondence, speeches, an autobiography, articles, awards, reports, course information, theses proposals, serials, conference and symposia information, research plans, photographs, slides, artifacts, and other materials related to Zobel's career in forestry. Included are materials relating to Zobel's work on the faculty of North Carolina State University as well as work with the Central America and Mexico Resources Cooperative (CAMCORE), the Cooperative Forest Genetics Research Program, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Marcus Wallenberg Foundation for Promoting Scientific Research in the Forest Industry, the N.C. State-Industry Cooperative Forest Tree Improvement Program, the Southern Forest Tree Improvement Committee, the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI), Zobel Forestry Associates, and other organizations. Major topics include international forest improvement programs, forest genetics, wood properties, forest management, and tropical forestry. Bruce J. Zobel (1920-2011) was an internationally respected lecturer, consultant, professor, and expert on forest genetics and forest improvement. His career at North Carolina State University as a professor, head of the North Carolina Tree Improvement Cooperative, and professor emeritus as spanned nearly fifty years, from 1957 to 2004. Less

The Bruce Schmeiser Papers, circa 1923-2014, document various aspects of Dr. Schmeiser's work in the field of computer simulation, where he has made notable contributions to simulation theory, methodology, and various forms of practical applications. He had been a leader in initiating and sustaining the primary ongoing activities of the INFORMS Simulation Society and the Winter Simulation Conference (WSC). Dr. Bruce Schmeiser received his B.A. in mathematical sciences from the University of Iowa (1969), his MS in industrial and management engineering from the University of Iowa (1971), and his Ph.D. from the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech (1975). Upon completing his Ph.D., Schmeiser worked as an assistant professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research at Southern Methodist University (1975-1978), later becoming an associate professor in the same department (1978-1979). Schmeiser took an associate professorship within the School of Industrial Engineering at Purdue University (1979-1984), later becoming a full professor in the same department (1984-2012). Dr. Schmeiser is a Fellow of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) and a recipient of the I-Sim Distinguished Service Award (1997) and the David F. Baker Distinguished Service Award from IIE (2004). Less
