The Brian Shawcroft Papers, 1958-2017, contain drawings and other materials documenting the professional activities of modernist architect Brian Shawcroft and associated architecture firms Holloway-Reeves; MacMillan, MacMillan, Shawcroft & Thames; Environmental Planning Associates; Shawcroft-Taylor; and McKimmon Edwards Shawcroft Associates. The collection is arranged into five series: drawings, professional files, photographic materials, project records, and slides. Drawings include original drawings, reproductions, and CAD printouts of process (or design) drawings and construction documents such as site plans, additions, alterations, and remodeling plans. Professional files include a list of completed projects, reproductions of photographs of projects, and supplemental materials to projects, Shawcroft’s curriculum vitae, and awards. Photographic materials include black-and-white and color prints and photographs of projects. Most photographs were taken by Shawcroft.

In 1960, he received a Masters in Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Following this, he served as an associate professor and lecturer in architecture at the North Carolina State College's School of Design from 1960 to 1968. Shawcroft began practicing architecture professionally in 1954 and worked with various firms throughout his career. He is recognized for designing much of the modernist home inventory in the Research Triangle region from the 1970s to the late 1990s. In 1991 he was awarded the annual Henry Kamphoefner Prize by the American Institute of Architects-North Carolina Chapter for demonstrated excellence in the Modern Movement of architecture. He died in 2017.

Shawcroft served as the consulting architect for design to the firm Holloway-Reeves, Architects in 1961, as a partner with the firms MacMillian, MacMillan, Shawcroft & Thames (1968-1970), Environmental Planning Associates (1971 to 1978), and Shawcroft-Taylor 1978-1988). He also worked on commissions independently under Brian Shawcroft, Architect. Many completed projects are located in the Research Triangle region of North Carolina (Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill).
Shawcroft is recognized for designing much of the modernist home inventory in the Triangle region from the 1970s to the late 1990s. In 1991 he was awarded the annual Henry Kamphoefner Prize by the American Institute of Architects-North Carolina Chapter for demonstrated excellence in the Modern Movement of architecture. He is recognized for skills in figure drawing and photography. He funds the Shawcroft Prize at the North Carolina State University College of Design, awarded annually to an architecture student for superior hand drawing skills. He died in 2017.

This series contains reproductions, CAD printouts, sketches, and other professional drawings of projects undertaken by Shawcroft and his firms. Projects are of residences and civic, commercial, and other buildings such as hospitals, schools, universities and colleges, and a church. The drawings consist of process (or design) drawings and construction documents, such as site plans, additions, alterations, and remodeling plans. Most of the projects are located in the Triangle region of North Carolina, Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. Other project locations include other cities in North Carolina. Two projects are located in New York. Many reproductions contain original markings and sketches.
Shawcroft and various firms served as the architects for these projects. Architect and firm names include Brian Shawcroft, Architect; MacMillan, MacMillan, Shawcroft and Thames, Architects; Environmental Planning Associates; and Shawcroft-Taylor Architects. In addition, several projects drawings are of the firm Holloway-Reeves, Architects with Shawcroft listed as the consulting architect. The drawings in this series range from 1962 to 2017.
