The Brian Shawcroft Papers, 1958-2017, contain drawings and other materials documenting the professional activities of modernist architect Brian Shawcroft and associated architecture firms Holloway-Reeves; MacMillan, MacMillan, Shawcroft & Thames; Environmental Planning Associates; Shawcroft-Taylor; and McKimmon Edwards Shawcroft Associates. The collection is arranged into five series: drawings, professional files, photographic materials, project records, and slides. Drawings include original drawings, reproductions, and CAD printouts of process (or design) drawings and construction documents such as site plans, additions, alterations, and remodeling plans. Professional files include a list of completed projects, reproductions of photographs of projects, and supplemental materials to projects, Shawcroft’s curriculum vitae, and awards. Photographic materials include black-and-white and color prints and photographs of projects. Most photographs were taken by Shawcroft. Brian Shawcroft, born in England in 1929, is a modernist architect. Shawcroft studied architecture at the South West Essex Technical College and School of Art in London from 1949 to 1953. In 1960, he received a Masters in Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Following this, he served as an associate professor and lecturer in architecture at the North Carolina State College's School of Design from 1960 to 1968. Shawcroft began practicing architecture professionally in 1954 and worked with various firms throughout his career. He is recognized for designing much of the modernist home inventory in the Research Triangle region from the 1970s to the late 1990s. In 1991 he was awarded the annual Henry Kamphoefner Prize by the American Institute of Architects-North Carolina Chapter for demonstrated excellence in the Modern Movement of architecture. The Eduardo Catalano Papers contains articles, news clippings, magazines, and books on Catalano's architectural projects and professional accomplishments, as well as photographs, digital photographs, photographic slides, negatives, positive transparencies, design drawings, and one videocassette. This includes books, articles, and other writings authored by Catalano, and diplomas, certificates, and certifications he received during his professional and educational careers. The collection also contains metal printing plates of Catalano's designs used in various publications covering his work. Many of these publications can be found in the Printed Materials, Writings, and Correspondence series. There is also a small amount of correspondence. Eduardo Fernando Catalano (1917-2010) was a well-known modernist architect and Head of Architecture at the School of Design at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) from 1951 to 1956. Catalano was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on December 19, 1917. He attended the Universidad de Buenos Aires and graduated in 1940 with an Architect's Diploma and honors for his coursework. Having received scholarships to pursue studies in the United States, Catalano relocated to attend the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard University. He graduated in 1944 and 1945 respectively with a Master of Architecture degree. At Harvard, Catalano studied under two masters of modernist architecture, Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer. Less

The Jerome Robert Cerny architectural drawings for Truman and Annie Williams (1935-1938) contains twenty-four blueprints documenting the original architecture and landscape of the Williams residence, 910 Harvey Street, Raleigh, North Carolina. The drawings were created by architect Jerome Robert Cerny of Lake Forest, Illinois and Charles F. Gillette, a Raleigh-based landscape architect. Truman and Annie Williams commissioned the construction of this home in 1939. Mrs. Williams saw photographs in a magazine of a residence in Lake Forest, Illinois, created by Jerome Robert Cerny. The Williamses then commissioned Cerny to create a similar residence for them in Raleigh, North Carolina. Charles F. Gillette was the landscape architect on the project and several of his drawings, specifically created for the Williams residence, are included in this collection. Less

The collection is comprised of project files and blueprints for the Jolly-Broughton House. Some of the blueprints are marked foreman's copy. Additionally, some of the blueprints have the notation, "Revised June 29 1929." The Jolly-Broughton House, located on 929 Holt Drive in Raleigh, North Carolina, is a two-story brick Georgian Revival home. Charles Atwood and Arthur C. Nash are listed on the blueprints as the Architects & Engineers, but Nash was specifically involved with the project. Howard E. Satterfield was also involved with the project (in all likelihood) but his name is not listed on the blueprints. The home was originally built for Janie R. Jolly of Jolly's Jewelers in 1928-1929. J. Melville Broughton, Jr., resided here before and after his term as Governor of North Carolina (1941-1945). The home is included in the Hayes Barton Historic District in Wake County, North Carolina.
