Records, 1927-1930, relating to construction of a two-family house, designed by Harry P. S. Keller, at 221 E. Lane Street in Raleigh, North Carolina, for B. Grimes Williams. Included are the contract, 15 July 1927, between Howard E. Satterfield (the contractor) and B. Grimes Williams (the owner), bids from other contractors, itemized statements from the contractor, quotes and other material relating to proposed provision of electrical wiring and window shades for the building, and a survey of a lot on E. Lane St. and bill for the survey. Samples of material for Holland shades are also included. Born in 1902, son of Alfred Williams II (d. 1937), who was namesake and grandnephew of Alfred Williams (10 June 1805–9 Jan. 1896), Grimes Williams was employed in the Alfred Williams Company, book seller and publisher, magazine publisher, seller of chalk, blackboards, office equipment, and textbooks. Grimes Williams retired in 1958. In 1960, the company shifted to sales of office machines, furniture and supplies. The Brian Shawcroft Papers, 1958-2017, contain drawings and other materials documenting the professional activities of modernist architect Brian Shawcroft and associated architecture firms Holloway-Reeves; MacMillan, MacMillan, Shawcroft & Thames; Environmental Planning Associates; Shawcroft-Taylor; and McKimmon Edwards Shawcroft Associates. The collection is arranged into five series: drawings, professional files, photographic materials, project records, and slides. Drawings include original drawings, reproductions, and CAD printouts of process (or design) drawings and construction documents such as site plans, additions, alterations, and remodeling plans. Professional files include a list of completed projects, reproductions of photographs of projects, and supplemental materials to projects, Shawcroft’s curriculum vitae, and awards. Photographic materials include black-and-white and color prints and photographs of projects. Most photographs were taken by Shawcroft. Brian Shawcroft, born in England in 1929, is a modernist architect. Shawcroft studied architecture at the South West Essex Technical College and School of Art in London from 1949 to 1953. In 1960, he received a Masters in Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Following this, he served as an associate professor and lecturer in architecture at the North Carolina State College's School of Design from 1960 to 1968. Shawcroft began practicing architecture professionally in 1954 and worked with various firms throughout his career. He is recognized for designing much of the modernist home inventory in the Research Triangle region from the 1970s to the late 1990s. In 1991 he was awarded the annual Henry Kamphoefner Prize by the American Institute of Architects-North Carolina Chapter for demonstrated excellence in the Modern Movement of architecture. The Edgar H. and Margaret K. Hunter Architectural Papers contains drawings and job files from the Hunters' work, primarily in New Hampshire and North Carolina, as well as professional and personal photographs and slides. Edgar Hayes "Ted" Hunter Jr. (1914-1995) received A.B. and M.Ed. degrees from Dartmouth College in 1938 and 1950. He also received B.A. and Master of Architecture degrees from Harvard in 1941 and 1970. At Harvard, Hunter met Margaret "Peg" King (1919-1997), whom he would later marry. Margaret Hunter received a B.A. in Botany at Wheaton College and was a member of the first class of female architects at the Harvard School of Design in 1942. The Hunters practiced in Hanover, New Hampshire, from 1945 to 1966, both teaching at Dartmouth and designing several buildings on the campus. In 1966 they relocated to Raleigh as E.H. and M.K. Hunter AIA. There, the couple continued to design and renovate residential structures as well as commercial buildings, such as the Craft Pavilion at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds, Ridgewood Shopping Center, and North Hills Shopping Center. The G. Milton Small Papers contain architectural drawings and photographs of projects and structures designed by architect G. Milton Small between 1950 and 1981. The collection primarily consists of architectural drawings of Small's designs, many of which were constructed on the North Carolina State University campus and elsewhere in the Raleigh, North Carolina, region. The collection also contains photographs taken by architectural photographers Joseph Molitor and Holland Wright, as well as Small's writings on computerized parking systems. Two additional series were added in 2015, which include project files and specifications for some projects as well as catalogs and related materials from architectural firms. Milton Small Jr. (1916-1992) was a student of Mies van der Rohe and was one of the foremost modernist architects working in the southeastern United States in the later half of the 20th century. Small was born in Collinsville, Oklahoma. He graduated with a bachelors degree from the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma, and a masters from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, Illinois, where he studied under Mies van der Rohe. In Chicago he worked for the firms Perkins and Will, and Hudgins Thompson and Ball. Small relocated to North Carolina in 1948 to head the architectural office of William Henley Deitrick, at that time Raleigh's largest architectural firm and the most committed to modernist design. Small was recommended for the position by a former professor at the University of Oklahoma, Henry Kamphoefner, who was himself relocating to Raleigh to take over the deanship of North Carolina State University's new School of Design. Small headed Deitrick's office for two years, during which time he produced several important modernist designs, principally, a new clubhouse for the Carolina Country Club, which was the subject of a Life magazine article, "New Country Club" (31 July 1950. p. 70). The George Matsumoto Papers includes blueprints, specifications, sketches, correspondence, publications, scrapbooks, photographs, contracts, financial statements, and other related architectural records that document the extensive commercial and residential work of George Matsumoto and Associates. The bulk of the collection is composed of architectural records, such as drawings and sketches, that signify Matsumoto's architectural influences and his approach to project development over time. Included are materials that cover the various types of projects he took on, such as residential, collegiate, commercial, and community centers. The architectural records cover a wide expanse of projects primarily in North Carolina and California, with others in Virginia, Missouri, New York, Florida, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Illinois. The architectural records, publications, honors and awards, and architectural model contained in the collection portray Matsumoto's career as an architect, businessman, and leader of modernist architecture in the 20th century. George Matsumoto (1922-2016) was a Japanese American architect and educator who is most known for his award-winning, modernist designs. In 1948, Matsumoto became a faculty member at the School (later College) of Design of North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University). During his tenure at the School of Design, Matsumoto won more than thirty awards for his residential work, and his achievements in design were widely published. In 1961, George Matsumoto went on to join the faculty at the College of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley, and opened his own firm. He stopped teaching in 1967 but continued his architecture work until 1991. In contrast to his residential work, Matsumoto's post-teaching work is mostly comprised of community centers and collegiate designs. Less

Publicity material includes books, brochures, and other materials that publicize the lives and works of various architects and architectural firms. The James Fitzgibbon Papers includes architect and North Carolina State University School of Design professor James Fitzgibbon’s architectural drawings for the Ralph Fadum House of Raleigh, North Carolina, the George W. Paschal House, also of Raleigh, the Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Daniel House of Knoxville, Tennessee, and photographs and study models from his time working at Synergetics Inc. The collection includes color spot sketches of the exterior; site plans; working drawings; floor plans; shop drawings and blueprints and two undated drawings (1 sketch of interior elevation and 1 floor plan of 617 Kirby Street, Raleigh, North Carolina.); photographs by Joseph Molitor of the Fadum House; two models of the Globe Playhouse; photographs of study models and articles. James Walter Fitzgibbon (1915-1985) helped found the School of Design at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in 1948. Fitzgibbon was hired as the associate architect for campus planning during the School of Design’s inception. He also served as a professor of architecture at North Carolina State College from 1948 to 1953. Fitzgibbon later served as president of Synergetics Inc., an association of Raleigh architects and engineers, before taking a position with Washington University in St. Louis. The Leif Valand Architectural Papers consists of architectural drawings and small number of related items (correspondence, awards, and others). The blueprints of St. Ambrose Episcopal Church are of particular significance; Valand designed this African-American church in 1963. There is also a set of blueprints (18) for house plan types for Cameron Village. There are nine blueprints and one architectural drawing dating from 1951 of Mr. Everett Case's residence located in Cameron Village, Raleigh, North Carolina. Everett Case (1900-1966) was the North Carolina State University basketball coach from 1946 to 1964. Case led the Wolfpack to win nine straight conference titles in his first nine years, six straight Southern Conference titles, and four Atlantic Coast Conference titles. Leif Valand (1915-1985) was a prominent Raleigh architect from the late 1940s to the 1970s. He was born in Norway and immigrated to New York as a boy. Valand attended the Pratt Institute in New York City and then practiced architecture in Scarsdale, New York, prior to moving to Raleigh in the late 1940s to work on the Cameron Village Shopping Center. In his heyday, Valand was the most prolific architect in Raleigh. Some of his other works include the Cameron Village Office Buildings and Apartments, Enloe High School, the Federal Building on New Bern Ave, North Ridge Country Club, North Hills Shopping Center, the Velvet Cloak Hotel, the Central Raleigh YMCA, the State Administration Building, St. Michael's Episcopal Church, the Raleigh Women's Club, and many private residences.
