The Edgar H. and Margaret K. Hunter Architectural Papers contains drawings and job files from the Hunters' work, primarily in New Hampshire and North Carolina, as well as professional and personal photographs and slides.
Edgar Hayes "Ted" Hunter Jr. (1914-1995) received A.B. and M.Ed. degrees from Dartmouth College in 1938 and 1950. He also received B.A. and Master of Architecture degrees from Harvard in 1941 and 1970. At Harvard, Hunter met Margaret "Peg" King (1919-1997), whom he would later marry. Margaret Hunter received a B.A. in Botany at Wheaton College and was a member of the first class of female architects at the Harvard School of Design in 1942. The Hunters practiced in Hanover, New Hampshire, from 1945 to 1966, both teaching at Dartmouth and designing several buildings on the campus. In 1966 they relocated to Raleigh as E.H. and M.K. Hunter AIA. There, the couple continued to design and renovate residential structures as well as commercial buildings, such as the Craft Pavilion at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds, Ridgewood Shopping Center, and North Hills Shopping Center.
Biographical/historical note
Edgar Hayes "Ted" Hunter Jr. (1914-1995) received an Artium Baccalaureus from Dartmouth College (1938) and a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from Harvard (1941). He later received his Masters in Education from Dartmouth (1950) and a Masters in Architecture from Harvard (1970). Hunter was a professor for 20 years at Dartmouth College and Chapter President of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) while in New Hampshire and, later, in North Carolina. E. H. Hunter was also a competitive Alpine skier in the 1930s. At Harvard, Hunter met Margaret "Peg" King (1919-1997), whom he would later marry. M. K. Hunter received a Bachelor of Arts in Botany at Wheaton College and was a member of the first class of female architects at the Harvard School of Design in 1942. The Hunters practiced in Hanover, New Hampshire from 1945 tp 1966, both teaching at Dartmouth and designing several buildings on the campus. They were featured in the 1950, 1953, and 1956 Architectural Record, among other magazines. In 1966 they relocated to Raleigh where they would practice as E.H. and M.K. Hunter AIA. In Raleigh, the couple continued to design and renovate residential structures as well as commercial buildings, such as the Craft Pavilion at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds, Ridgewood Shopping Center, and North Hills Shopping Center. Their Raleigh home, no longer standing, was one of their best works. The couple authored "The Indoor Garden" together. M. K. Hunter also wrote "Your Own Kitchen" and "Garden Survival Book" with Virginia W. Williams.
Scope/content
The Edgar H. and Margaret K. Hunter Architectural Papers contains drawings and job files from the Hunters' work, primarily in New Hampshire and North Carolina, as well as professional and personal photographs and slides. The contents reflect the Hunters' architectural career before and after their relocation to North Carolina in 1969 and includes a large number of residential, commercial, and educational building projects. The Project Files series contains correspondence, reports, and contracts with clients, and the Professional Files series contains presentations, photographs, and publicity related to their work. Personal Records include personal photographs and negatives, as well as a few audio visual tape reels. There are four non-Hunter drawings that were part of the donated collection, these are contained in the Drawings from Other Architects series.
