Albert Cecil Woodroof (1895-1986) was an architect based in Greensboro, North Carolina. Woodroof received his architectural license in 1927. He worked for several firms throughout the Southeast before opening his own firm in 1935. His projects included residences, churches, and schools. Albert Cecil Woodroof, Jr. (1920-1991) was an architect based in Greensboro, North Carolina. He received a Bachelor of Science in Commerce from the University of North Carolina in 1940. From 1948 to 1963, Woodroof worked in the architectural firm of his father, Albert C. Woodroof, Sr., first as a draftsman and later as a partner. In 1964 Woodroof, Jr. opened his own firm, and later partnered with John S. MacRae and Martin A. Senell. The bulk of the collection is comprised of Davis's office records and architectural drawings. Archie Royal Davis (1907-1980) earned his architecture degree in 1930 from North Carolina State College and an engineering degree from the University of North Carolina in 1934. He established his own architectural firm in Durham, North Carolina, in 1939. In 1948, he was appointed as the Orange County Schools Architect. The David C. Fischetti Papers, 1962-2011, document the professional career of David Fischetti and the work of his professional engineering firm, DCF Engineering, Inc. This collection is arranged in three series: drawings, project files, and professional files. The collection consists primarily of architectural drawings and paperwork associated with client projects and Fischetti’s professional development. The projects include covered bridges, historic structures, parks, university campuses, churches, civic facilities, and a few residences. Also included are book and presentation drafts, conference ephemera, photographs, and testimony given by Fischetti in several lawsuits. Geographically, the project files represent projects located primarily, though not exclusively, throughout the eastern seaboard. David Carmichael Fischetti (1946-2011) was born in Brooklyn, New York. He earned a BS in Civil Engineering from Clemson University in 1969. In 1975, Fischetti opened his own firm, DCF Engineering, Inc., in Cary, North Carolina, which he operated until his death. He was registered as a Professional Engineer in nineteen states. Fischetti’s engineering projects often focused on historic structures, including covered bridges, churches, and historic properties. His best known project in North Carolina was the twenty-year-long effort to relocate the historic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, for which he was the engineer of record. For his preservation work, Fischetti was lauded with scores of awards from various state preservation societies and national professional associations.Fischetti was an active member of state- and national- level professional engineering and historic preservation associations. He gave numerous conference presentations, published scholarly papers, and taught several courses. He was a Professional Fellow of the Historic Resources Imaging Laboratory, School of Architecture at Texas A&M University and received the Orthogonal Medal from the faculty of Graphic Communications at North Carolina State University in 2000. In 2009, Fischetti published a textbook, “Structural Investigation of Historic Buildings.” Fischetti died in March of 2011. Less

The Edgar H. and Margaret K. Hunter Architectural Papers contains drawings and job files from the Hunters' work, primarily in New Hampshire and North Carolina, as well as professional and personal photographs and slides. Edgar Hayes "Ted" Hunter Jr. (1914-1995) received A.B. and M.Ed. degrees from Dartmouth College in 1938 and 1950. He also received B.A. and Master of Architecture degrees from Harvard in 1941 and 1970. At Harvard, Hunter met Margaret "Peg" King (1919-1997), whom he would later marry. Margaret Hunter received a B.A. in Botany at Wheaton College and was a member of the first class of female architects at the Harvard School of Design in 1942. The Hunters practiced in Hanover, New Hampshire, from 1945 to 1966, both teaching at Dartmouth and designing several buildings on the campus. In 1966 they relocated to Raleigh as E.H. and M.K. Hunter AIA. There, the couple continued to design and renovate residential structures as well as commercial buildings, such as the Craft Pavilion at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds, Ridgewood Shopping Center, and North Hills Shopping Center. The Edwin F. Harris Papers, 1957-2014, collection contains drawings, blueprints, maps, correspondence, photographs, and other documents related to the professional career of Edwin F. Harris. The collection reflects Harris’ work as an architect on a number of university campus planning projects and commercial building projects. During his more than two decades of employment with North Carolina State University, Harris contributed to the design and construction of many portions of the university, including Centennial Campus and the College of Veterinary Medicine. Harris also contributed to the design of several commercial buildings in North Carolina’s Research Triangle and buildings on other North Carolina university campuses. These projects include The Carolina Theatre and the North Carolina Biotechnology Center in Durham, the Worrell Professional Center at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, and the YMCA at Guilford College in Greensboro. Edwin F. Harris, nicknamed "Abie," was born January 7, 1934, in Elkin, North Carolina. He graduated from Elkin High School in 1952 and enrolled at the North Carolina State College, School of Design (later North Carolina State University, College of Design) to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in architecture. He graduated with honors in 1957. Harris was awarded the 45th Paris Prize in Architecture in 1958 which he used to travel to Paris, after a period of Army service. After returning from Paris, he became a lecturer at the NC State University School of Design and joined Leif Valand and Associates as an Architect-in-Training. In 1966 he was a co-founder and partner of Harris & Burns, Architects (1966-1968) and then a co-founder and principle for Envirotek, Inc. (1969-1974). In 1966, Harris also joined the campus planning department at NC State University. In 1970 he became Director of Facilities Planning and in 1980 University Architect. In addition to being an avid runner, Edwin F. Harris spent much of his spare time participating in design competitions and serving as a consultant on various projects. His honors include the grand prize in a planning competition for the University of Miami in 1986, his election as an American Institute of Architects Fellow in 1987, and the 9th Annual Frank B. Turner Award in 1991. Less

The materials in this collection represents a sampling of the buildings designed by Flannagan and his company. They primarily date from the time period when Flannagan was most active,1922-1949. Eric G. Flannagan, Sr. (1892-1970) was an architect and engineer practicing most of his life in North Carolina. This collection comprises research files for the chapters that Wood contributed to the book Architects and Builders in North Carolina: A History of the Practice of Building, including correspondence, project notes, photographs and photograph permissions requests, interviews with architects (including audiotapes), newsclippings, and some architectural drawings. Also included are publications by Wood as well as research pertaining to other writing projects featuring architecture and design as a central theme. Ernest H. (Ernie) Wood III was an architectural writer for Southern Living and an editor for North Carolina Architect. He has also published articles in the AIA Journal and other periodicals. For the 1990 book Architects and Builders in North Carolina: A History of the Practice of Building (co-authored with with Catherine Bishir, Charlotte Vestal Brown, and Carl Lounsbury), he authored the final chapter, entitled "The Opportunities Are Unlimited: Architects and Builders since 1945." The George Matsumoto Papers includes blueprints, specifications, sketches, correspondence, publications, scrapbooks, photographs, contracts, financial statements, and other related architectural records that document the extensive commercial and residential work of George Matsumoto and Associates. The bulk of the collection is composed of architectural records, such as drawings and sketches, that signify Matsumoto's architectural influences and his approach to project development over time. Included are materials that cover the various types of projects he took on, such as residential, collegiate, commercial, and community centers. The architectural records cover a wide expanse of projects primarily in North Carolina and California, with others in Virginia, Missouri, New York, Florida, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Illinois. The architectural records, publications, honors and awards, and architectural model contained in the collection portray Matsumoto's career as an architect, businessman, and leader of modernist architecture in the 20th century. The materials range from 1930 to 2009, with the bulk from 1940 to 1979. A project index to the collection is available online. George Matsumoto (1922-2016) was a Japanese American architect and educator who is most known for his award-winning, modernist designs. In 1948, Matsumoto became a faculty member at the School (later College) of Design of North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University). During his tenure at the School of Design, Matsumoto won more than thirty awards for his residential work, and his achievements in design were widely published. In 1961, George Matsumoto went on to join the faculty at the College of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley, and opened his own firm. He stopped teaching in 1967 but continued his architecture work until 1991. In contrast to his residential work, Matsumoto's post-teaching work is mostly comprised of community centers and collegiate designs. Less

This collection contains architectural drawings and specifications, 1928-1977, documenting the works of William Henley Deitrick and his successor, Guy E. Crampton. Included are Deitrick's competition winning design for Needham Broughton High School (1928), his modernist Carolina County Club (1948), the prize winning Dorton Arena (with Matthew Nowicki, 1950 to 1951), and public housing pojects for the Raleigh Housing Authority. Crampton's designs include several buildings for Elon College (1965), the Wake Forest College Stadium (1966), numerous projects for the Wachovia Bank & Trust Co., and many public school buildings. The specifications are for buildings designed by Guy E. Crampton and Associates, including the Wake Forest College Stadium and public schools. William Henley Deitrick was born in Danville, Virginia, in 1895. He graduated from Wake Forest College in 1916. Then he worked as a high school principal for a year in Georgia. During World War I, Deitrick served as a second lieutenant in the United States Army . After the war, he worked as a building contractor from 1919 to 1922. He entered Columbia University, New York in 1922 and studied architecture there until 1924. In 1926 he began practicing architecture. During his professional career Deitrick earned many distinctions. He sold his firm to associate Guy E. Crampton upon his retirement in 1959. Guy Edwin Crampton, Jr., was born in Washington, D.C. on 19 September 1913. From 1934 to 1940 he was a draftsman in the Supervising Architect's Office of the Federal Works Agency. He graduated from George Washington University with a bachelor of architecture in 1939. Between 1940 and 1949 Crampton worked for several different architectural firms. In 1950 he became an associate of William Henley Deitrick and Associates. In 1959 the firm changed its name to Guy E. Crampton and Associates with Crampton as a general partner. Crampton retired in 1976. Less

The Harris and Pyne Records contain drawings, project files, photographs, and personal files documenting the professional activities of the Harris and Pyne architectural and engineering firm and its predecessor firms H. Raymond Weeks, Inc., Atwood and Weeks, and Atwood and Nash. The collection is arranged into four series: Drawings, Project Files, Photographic Materials, and Personal Files. Drawings include original pencil drawings, blueprints, and other reproductions. Project files includes various materials relating to projects, including a scrapbook, newsclippings, a financial recordbook, and supplemental documents to projects. Photographic materials includes professional black and white photographs of projects. Original documentation for many of the buildings and projects of these architecture firms is no longer in existence. Lastly, personal files include certificates, membership cards, biographical notes and obituary notes. Harris and Pyne was an architectural and engineering firm in Durham, North Carolina, from about 1958 to the 1990s, headed by engineer Wilton E. Harris and architect George C. Pyne, Jr. Its predecessor firms were T. C. Atwood (prior to 1920), Atwood & Nash, Architects and Engineers (early 1920s-early 1930s), Atwood & Weeks (1930s-1942), and H. Raymond Weeks, Inc. The Harry Barton Architectural Drawings consists of seven blueprint drawings of the S. H. Tomlinson House, located at 403 Hillcrest Drive, High Point, North Carolina. These architectural drawings include floorplans, elevations, and building details, and they date from 1923-1924. Harry Barton was born in 1876 and died in 1937. He was an important North Carolina architect based in Greensboro. Barton worked in the Tudor Revival style for several residential designs. He also designed many educational and civic buildings in Georgian Revival and Neoclassical styles, including buildings on the campus of the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. Less

Publicity material includes books, brochures, and other materials that publicize the lives and works of various architects and architectural firms. Design competitions and projects includes reports, manuals, and other publications relating to design competitions and projects. Few items relate to the School of Design. The dates of this collection range from 1939 to 1992; several items are undated. The Harrye B. Lyons Design Library supports the North Carolina State University College of Design and has collection emphases in architecture, landscape architecture, graphic design, industrial design, and art and design. The collection contains the business and design records from James M. Webb's architectural firm, as well as his personal papers and some papers of his brother, John B. Webb, and his mother, Martha Webb. The major groupings of records are Project Files, Drawings, Maps, Professional Papers, Personal Papers, Photographs and Slides, Videos, Artifacts, John B. Webb, and Martha Webb. James Murray Webb was born in 1908 and died in 2000. In 1947, he joined the new City and Regional Planning School at the University of North Carolina (UNC) in Chapel Hill, where he served as a faculty member for thirty years. He and his brother, John Bruce Webb, maintained an architectural practice in Chapel Hill and designed a number of modernist houses and other buildings in the area. Less

This collection documents Jehu Dewitt Paulson's career as an artist and educator and contains drawings, paintings, prints, plates, photographs and illustrations for published and unpublished manuscripts. The Personal files include Paulson's application for a Guggenheim Fellowship (1934), photographs of Paulson and his family, certificates of memberships to various societies and fraternities, a curriculum vitae, and notes from his college years. The North Carolina State College series includes class notes, a partial history of the Department of Architecture, course materials and notes on the appreciation of paintings. The Building Images subseries contains photographs, pencil sketches and plates of various campus buildings, including Memorial Tower, Primrose Hall, and Pullen Hall. Files of picture clippings on varied subjects (architecture, bridge building, interiors, landscaping, murals, paintings and sculpture, etc.) comprise another series. The Writings, Research and Inventions series contains identifications of paintings (by painter and subject), correspondence regarding the identification process, and published writings, including The Exterior Form of the Solitary Atom (1952), and unpublished manuscripts ("Appreciation of Painting," "Escape from Atlantis," and "People Makers, a Fantasy of Evolution"). Among the inventions are plans for an elevated storage tower and for an improved internal combustion rotary motor. Also included in this series are subject files of picture clippings on varied subjects (architecture, bridge building, interiors, landscaping, murals, paintings and sculpture, etc.). The Paintings, Sketches, Drawings, and Designs series comprise a good representation of Paulson's original artwork. This series also contains drawings and related papers on The Forms of the Elementary Atoms and The Periodic Law. The Photographic series contains undated photos of various atoms and elements. The Family Papers series contains a printed book on family history. The Kenneth McCoy Scott collection contains project files, personal and professional papers, drawings and microfilms for buildings designed by Scott. Scott predominately designed residential and retail spaces, such as apartment complexes, shopping centers and motels. He also worked on educational and religious buildings. Project files include notes, correspondence, equipment catalogs, photographs, and contract information. The majority of the drawings are working drawings and shop drawings, although sketches, elevation site plans, and landscape plans are also included. Drawings may be on blue and brown paper, heavy translucent paper, sketch paper, and tracing paper. Several projects are also available on microfilm. Included in Scott's professional records are American Institute of Architecture records from the national and North Carolina chapters, and records from Scott's architectural firm. Personal papers include class notes from Scott's time as an architecture student, photographs, and personal correspondence. Scott's job book, an index to his projects (including file name, number, and project type), is available in the Professional Files series of the collection. Less

The Leslie N. Boney Architectural Papers document the work of Wilmington, North Carolina, architects Leslie N. Boney Sr., and Leslie N. Boney Jr. from projects done in conjunction with architect James F. Gause in the 1920s through projects of Boney Architects, Inc., in the 1980s. Educational institution plans make up a significant portion of the project files in this collection, representing schools from the elementary through university levels. The firm's architectural projects also include churches, banks, residences, offices, libraries, and retail establishments. The vast majority of these buildings are located in North Carolina, especially in the eastern part of the state, though a small number of South Carolina projects are included as well. These project files include correspondence, inspection reports, drawings, blueprints, project specifications, photographs, contracts, and bid data and forms. Personal papers of Leslie N. Boney Sr., make up a small part of this collection, and include copies of textiles, chemistry, and English exams dating from 1901 to 1903, belonging to Leslie N. Boney Sr., C. L. Creech, and O. Max Gardner. A copy of Boney Sr.'s account of the 1901 fire that destroyed NC State University's original Watauga Hall, as printed in the 1903 Agromeck, is also included. North Carolina native Leslie N. Boney Sr. (1880-1964) graduated from the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) in 1903 with a degree in textile engineering. Boney joined Wilmington architect James F. Gause as a partner in practice in 1918, then took over the practice in 1922, upon Gause's retirement. Boney's eldest son, Leslie N. Boney Jr. (1920-2003), joined his father's practice after graduating from the College of Engineering at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering. Boney Jr. served in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II, earning the rank of major, and returned to his family's architectural practice following the war. Boney Jr. was a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, served as president of North Carolina's chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and was a recipient of North Carolina State University's prestigious Watauga Medal in 1996. The Murray Whisnant Papers contains correspondence, project files, slides and architectural drawings, as well as other records related to Murray Whisnant’s architectural projects and other designs dating from 1959 to 2017. Many of the projects Whisnant consulted on and designed were located in Charlotte, North Carolina. There are also sketches and plans of projects that were never completed. William Murray Whisnant was born and grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina, and graduated from Central High in 1950. He then attended North Carolina State University and studied within the School of Design for six years, where he was influenced by faculty member Eduardo Fernando Catalano and visiting architect Buckminster Fuller, as well as Dean Henry L. Kamphoefner. Upon graduation in 1956 Whisnant returned to Charlotte and joined the architectural firm of Sloan and Wheatley. In 1960, he became partner to Charles Wheatley. In 1974, Whisnant left to establish his own firm, Murray Whisnant Architects. In 1990 Murray Whisnant was awarded the Kamphoefner Prize by the AIA (American Institute of Architects) North Carolina chapter and the North Carolina Architectural Foundation. Murray Whisnant was active in the Charlotte community and even late in his life advocated for municipal projects, such as “Energy Park”, to enhance the lived spaces in the city where he was raised.
