The papers of Chester J. Lange, a prominent North Carolina veterinarian, are largely comprised of correspondence and organizational documents relating to his activities with the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (formerly called North Carolina State Veterinary Medical Association). Also included are newspaper clippings documenting his professional accomplishments. Information about the establishment of a veterinary school at North Carolina State University is included, as well as programs from conferences, flyers, and research notes. Chester J. Lange (April 14, 1910 - September 26, 1994) was a prominent veterinarian in Greensboro North Carolina. He received a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Cornell in 1932 and an M.S. degree in biology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1938. He worked for the United States Department of Agriculture and served in World War II as a captain in the Veterinary Corps before opening an animal hospital in Greensboro. He was active in the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (formerly called North Carolina State Veterinary Medical Association), serving as secretary-treasurer and later as president. The James Edgar Smallwood Papers primarily consist of teaching materials (articles, drawings and diagrams, handwritten notes, and syllabi) and related items, such as slides, X-rays, and audiovisual materials, that Dr. Smallwood used during his long tenure as a faculty member at the College of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University. Also included are materials related to Smallwood's participation in professional organizations, including the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association, the American Association of Veterinary Anatomists, and the American Veterinary Medical Association. Dr. James Edgar (Ed) Smallwood was a Professor of Gross Anatomy in the Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences at the College of Veterinary Medicine at NC State University. He earned a M.S. in Veterinary Anatomy at Texas A & M University in 1972 and his D.V.M. at Texas A & M University in 1969. Dr. Smallwood also served as the Senior Executive Director of the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine Alumni Society. He was also a member of the American Association of Veterinary Anatomists (1972 - present, President, 1988-1989); the World Association of Veterinary Anatomists (1977 - present; President, 1995-1999); the American Veterinary Medical Association (1969 - present); and the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (1981 - present). The Milton M. Leonard papers, 1934-1990, contains Dr. Milton Moot Leonard's research files and research papers written by him documenting the contributions he made during his years as a veterinarian in Asheville, North Carolina. Also included are medical pamplets, catalogs, animal x-rays, business correspondences, animal vendor catalogs, NC State University vet school catalogs, and black and white photos. Dr. Milton Moot Leonard (1893-1984) opened a veterinary practice in Asheville, North Carolina, in 1914. Active in veterinary circles, Leonard became the president of the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (NCVMA) in 1917 and served in every office of the association. In 1957 Dr. Leonard was named Veterinarian of the Year by the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (NCVMA). In 1978, he was awarded the Distinguished Veterinarian Award by the NCVMA. Leonard practiced for more than twenty-six years and attended twenty-six national conventions of veterinarians. He died in October 1984 at the age of ninety-one in Asheville, North Carolina. Less

The North Carolina State University Libraries, William Rand Kenan, Jr. Veterinary Medicine Library Records consist of four framed photographs of William R. Kenan, Jr. and his home, informational brochures, articles, born digital materials, photographs of the library dedication, and documents regarding gifts to the library. The Veterinary Medicine Library opened in 1981 with the first graduating class from the School (now College) of Veterinary Medicine. It supports the research and curriculum at the College of Veterinary Medicine and the study of life sciences, veterinary medicine, and animal and human health at NC State University. In 2006 it was renamed the William Rand Kenan, Jr. Library of Veterinary Medicine. Kenan (1872-1965) was a North Carolina native who contributed to progress in a variety of fields, including education, engineering, agriculture, finance, business and science. Less

The North Carolina State University College (previously, School) of Veterinary Medicine was established in 1978.
