Teaching Materials 1999-2012 (MC 00497 Series 1)

This series contains journal articles, handwritten notes, drawings and diagrams, and syllabi that Dr. Smallwood used while teaching anatomy courses at NC State University and at Texas A & M University. Journal articles span from 1969 to the 2000s and primarily reflect contemporary research into canine, feline, equine, and bovine anatomy and diseases, as well as radiographic anatomy, one of Smallwood's main research interests. Articles are by distinguished scholars like Dr. Michael J. Shively, Dr. Lionel F. Rubin, and Smallwood himself, and they appeared in publications like the American Journal of Veterinary Research and the Journal of the American Veterinary Medicine Association. Smallwood annotated many of these articles and attached other handwritten notes on article topics to be discussed in his courses.

Also included in this series is a working copy of Smallwood's 1999 publication, A Guided Tour of Veterinary Anatomy: Domestic Ungulates (2nd edition), along with mark-ups of anatomical drawings and diagrams that Smallwood drew by hand for the publication. A copy of Smallwood's 2004 article, "An Anatomist's Comments on Learning and Teaching," which appeared in the Journal of Veterinary Medical Education, is also included, as are materials related to Smallwood's efforts in the 1990s to obtain a whale skeleton for the College of Veterinary Medicine's educational collection.

This series contains a few study guides, quiz questions, and trivia related to Dr. Smallwood's anatomy courses. A syllabus for Anatomy I is also included.

Scattered correspondence related to published articles and research projects appears in this series as well.

This series is arranged alphabetically by subject. Numbered files correspond to chapters in Robert E. Habel's Applied Veterinary Anatomy, which are organized by body region.

Slides and Associated Materials circa 1970-2013, undated (MC 00497 Series 2)

This series contains slides that Dr. Smallwood used while teaching anatomy courses at Texas A & M University and NC State. Most slides are of the muscular, digestive, cardiovascular, and other internal systems of dogs, cats, and horses. Also included are slides related to important anatomy textbooks, including Peter Popesko's Atlas of Topographical Anatomy of the Domestic Animals (published in 1971 with later editions added), and slides related to anatomy labs that Smallwood coordinated. Documentary materials associated with the slides, including lecture notes, are included in some instances.

This series is arranged in the order that it was received. Headings and labels that Dr. Smallwood used for his slide collection have been maintained.

X-Rays 1896-2006 (MC 00497 Series 3)

This series contains X-rays that Smallwood used in his teaching and research. Many X-rays are associated with projects and studies in which Smallwood participated, one of which was conducted for the Quaker Oats Company. Other X-rays appear to be associated with the anatomy courses that Smallwood taught at NC State and Texas A & M University. A third set of X-rays are case files submitted to Smallwood from other veterinarians and veterinary practices. It is possible that Smallwood used these X-rays to assist other vets in diagnosing sick or injured animals. Unfortunately, however, most X-rays are not accompanied by detailed documentation, so the precise relationship of Smallwood to these other vets is unclear. A final set of X-rays are not specifically associated with case files, courses, or studies.

Most X-rays are of cats, dogs, horses, and cows. Some list the medical ailment that prompted the X-ray or that was diagnosed from the X-ray. Most X-rays date to the 1970s and 1980s. Of special interest is a copy of the first radiograph, dated to 1896.

This series is grouped according to the study, course, or case file number with which the X-rays are affiliated or thought to be affiliated. X-rays from research studies in which Smallwood participated (M915, F91, F5298) are arranged chronologically within each study. X-rays that appear to be associated with the courses that Smallwood taught are arranged numerically by course number, and then alphabetically by subject within each course. X-rays identified by a case file number are listed in ascending numerical order. Finally, X-rays unaffiliated with a study, course, or case file are listed alphabetically by subject.
