The A. C. Barefoot Papers consist of professional publications and correspondence, academic and adminstrative papers, computer cards and diskettes, fossils, forestry study video cassette tapes, and computer generated dendrochronological statistical studies conducted by Aldos Cortez Barefoot during his tenure with the Department of Wood and Paper Science at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University). A. C. (Aldos Cortez) Barefoot earned his Bachelors and Masters degrees in wood technology from North Carolina State College in the late 1940s, and then received a doctorate from Duke University in 1958 for his research on the manufacture of plywood. Though Barefoot's career often took him overseas for extended periods of time, he remained a member of the faculty at North Carolina State. In 1962, Barefoot was named an Associate Professor, he was promoted to Professor in 1968, and in 1975, Barefoot was named Head of the University Studies Division at North Carolina State University. These papers represent B. W. (Bertram Whittier) Wells's research interests, publications, and honors as well as Wells's personal life and pursuits, his first wife, Edna Metz Wells, his second wife, Maude Barnes Wells, and his household at Rockcliff Farm, a property on the Neuse River in North Carolina that Wells acquired before his retirement in 1954. In writing his biography of Wells, Prof. James R. Troyer amassed the majority of the materials comprising series 1 of these papers. Series 2 is composed of papers left behind by B. W. and Maude Barnes Wells at Rockcliff Farm, now part of the Falls Lake State Recreation Area in Wake Forest, North Carolina. A third series, Additional Artifacts and Books, has been added to the collection since the conclusion of an exhibit on Wells in 2007. Bertram Whittier Wells is most widely known for his study and preservation of North Carolina's natural environment. Wells headed North Carolina State College's (later North Carolina State University) Botany Department from 1919 to 1949 and remained on the faculty until 1954. One of the first to rightly be called an ecologist, he wrote on many topics: the insect galls of plants, the effects of salt on coastal vegetation, Bald Head Island, and the formation of the Carolina Bays. However, his most extensive work focused on savannah and pocosin vegetation. First published by the University of North Carolina Press in 1932, Wells's popular book, The Natural Gardens of North Carolina, remains in print. The Charles J. Nusbaum Papers relate to Nusbaum's plant pathology research as well as interactions with his students at North Carolina State University. This collection contains Nusbaum's essays, publications, and reports, research correspondence, and materials from his classes. Materials related to the Tobacco Workers Conference are also included. In addition, there are photographs and slides, some pertaining to Nusbaum's research and others to his personal life. The photographs generally date from the 1930s and 1940s. This collection contains Charles Wilson Suggs's notes, data, publications, papers presented, reports, photographs, and sketches, primarily on the topics of tobacco mechanization (tobacco harvesters and transplanters) and equipment ergonomics. Born in 1928, Suggs received his B.S.A.E. in 1949 and Ph.D. in 1959 from North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University), where he then joined the faculty. His research interests were tobacco mechanization and human-factors engineering. He developed one of the first mechanical tobacco leaf harvesters. Less

The Douglas Sanders Slides and Papers consist of materials gathered from Dr. Sanders's office on the campus of North Carolina State University. Over half of the materials consist of 35mm color photographic slides used by Dr. Sanders in his research, teaching, and presentations. The collection has not been fully processed yet. Douglas Sanders was a professor of horticultural science at North Carolina State University beginning in 1970. He received his bachelor's degree in 1965 from Michigan State University and his master’s degree and doctorate in 1967 and 1970 respectively from the University of Minnesota. His accomplishments included the establishment of the N.C. Vegetable Growers Association, introduction of numerous new vegetable technologies (drip irrigation, plasticulture, precision seeding) and introduction of new crops to North Carolina, including asparagus, broccoli, sweet onions and leaf lettuce. He served in various positions of the American Society for Horticultural Science. He was named a fellow of that organization in 1992 and received its Outstanding International Horticulturist Award in 2006. He died on April 17, 2006. Less

The Frederick L. Wellman Papers contain items relating to Wellman's plant pathology research. The collection includes correspondence, reports, publications, newspaper articles, manuscript materials, and photographs detailing Wellman's work on Fusarium and coffee rust disease (Hemileia vastatrix). Items in this collection date from 1915 to 1981, with the bulk of the materials dating from the 1950s to the early 1970s. Frederick Lovejoy Wellman (1897-1994) was a plant pathologist most known for his reasearch on coffee rust disease (Hemileia vastatrix). Wellman also studied other plant diseases, chiefly in Latin America. Less

John Erwin Ramsay, Sr., FAIA (1915-1991) was born in Salisbury, N.C., and educated at the University of North Carolina and Yale University's School of Architecture. Following service in the Army, 1941-1946, Ramsay returned to Salisbury to open the second architectural firm in that city. As strong proponents of modern architecture, Ramsay and Associaties were responsible for the design of many modernist residences and buildings, including the Rowan County Health and Agricultural Building, Alderman Studios in High Point, N.C., and the American Square showroom for American Furniture in Thomasville, N.C. Ramsay was also responsible for the restoration of numerous historic buildings in Rowan County, including the Rowan County Court House, the John Knox house, and his firm's offices, a converted early 20th-century residence. The John Fletcher Miller Papers contains materials related to Miller's involvement with athletics, intramural sports, and the Department of Physical Education at North Carolina State University. The collection contains a biographical essay, a certificate, correspondence, news and yearbook clippings, and photographs. The items date from 1924 to 1972. John Fletcher Miller was an athlete who played one season with the Saint Louis Browns (1912). He served as a coach at the University of Missouri, 1916-1921, and Albion College in Michigan, 1921-1924, before becoming the Head of the Department of Physical Education and Athletics at North Carolina State College in 1924. He served as the head of the Physical Education Department and the Director of Intramural Sports from 1924 to 1956. He was also the University's Director of Athletics and the President of the North Carolina Physical Education Association. The Miller Fields on the N.C. State campus are named for him. Less

The John William Harrelson Papers contain correspondence, speeches and writings, reports, minutes, clippings, certificates, scrapbooks, financial records, and photographs. The collection provides information about Harrelson's military career, 1917-1919; his tenure as a faculty member and administrator at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University), 1919-1929 and 1933-1953; and his service as director of the North Carolina Department of Conservation and Development, 1929-1933. The Lee Marshall Smith Papers document Smith's career as a reporter, film critic, newspaper editor, educator and novelist. Also documented are some of Smith's numerous awards and honors, including the Robert Penn Warren Fiction Prize in 1991 and the North Carolina Award for Fiction in 1984. Subject files contain biographical information, including a vita, documentation from her time as Writer-In-Residence at Hollins College, and correspondence with her publishers (Harper and Row, 1968-1973). The Writings series includes extensive drafts of Smith's writings, including typescripts, manuscripts, reproductions, and handwritten notes. Among Smith's published novels are Black Mountain Breakdown (1981), Oral History (1983) , Fair and Tender Ladies (1988), The Devil's Dream (1992), Saving Grace (1995), and The Last Girls (2002). Her short stories include "Mom (Life As We Knew It)", "The French Revolution, A Love Story", "Bob, A Dog", "Me and My Baby View the Eclipse" (with accompanying artwork) and "Camera Obscura". The collection also contains plays adapted from Smith's novels and short stories. A Reviews series includes reviews and critical essays about Smith's work from 1968 to the present. The Audiovisual Materials series includes sound tapes (Lee Smith reading from books and short stories, radio interviews, etc.), a compact disc, and VHS tapes. A popular author of novels and short stories, Lee Smith earned a B.A. in English from Hollins College in 1967. Immediately after college she worked as a reporter for the Richmond News Leader and the Tuscaloosa News. Smith was an English teacher at Harpeth Hall School in Nashville, 1971-1975, and at the Carolina Friends School in North Carolina, 1975-1977. She taught creative writing at Duke University in 1977 and at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 1978-1981. From 1979 to 1980 she was the director of a summer writing workshop for the University of Virginia. In 1981, she came to North Carolina State University, where she taught for 19 years. Less

The Ralph Fadum Papers document Fadum’s career as Dean and faculty member of the North Carolina State University College of Engineering from 1962 to 1978. The majority of the collection consists speeches and press releases. It also includes correspondence, research notes, awards, news articles, and photographs relating to Fadum's professional career as well as family and travel photographs from after his retirement. Fadum's consulting work, as well as his involvement in military projects and with the American Society of Civil Engineers. Ralph E. Fadum was born on July 19, 1912, in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Niagara Falls, New York. He came to North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in 1949 as a Professor and Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, holding this position until 1962. Dr. Fadum became the Dean of Engineering on July 1, 1962, serving the University until his retirement in 1978. Fadum was an adviser to many government agencies including the United States Department of Defense, United States Department of the Army, United State Air Force, National Science Foundation, and United States Department of Transportation. As a consultant, he was involved in solving many complex geotechnical problems, such as the construction of airfields in Greenland; the Alaska pipeline; launch facilities for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Apollo Project; the development of the road test program of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials; landslide stabilization for the Panama Canal; the construction of underground ICBM missile silos that could withstand nuclear blast effects; and the development of foundation requirements for radar stations in the North American Defense System. Fadum also had a strong interest in athletics. He served twice as president of the Atlantic Coast Conference, and a four-year term as vice president of District 3 of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Less

The Ralph W. Cummings Papers document the personal and professional life of Ralph W. Cummings. The primary focus of the collection is Cummings' career as a professor, researcher and administrator working at North Carolina State University and with international organizations in the fields of soil science and agronomy. The collection also contains the personal papers and letters of Ralph Cummings and the Cummings family papers which include a number of land deeds and legal documents dating from 1840 until 2001 as well as the personal papers of extended family members. Ralph W. Cummings (1911-2001) was born in Reidsville, North Carolina. He was the head of the Department of Agronomy at North Carolina State University from 1942 until 1947. He held a number of administrative positions for the University over the scope of his career, as well as working in research and leadership positions for a number of national and international organizations concerned with world agriculture and agricultural education and research. Papers and audiovisual materials documenting Scott Chilton’s botanical research, teaching career, and personal life. This includes notebooks, research and laboratory data, articles, news clippings, collected works, Chilton’s own writings and publications, course materials, correspondence, legal documents, slides, photographs, and VHS video recordings. The collection’s contents date from between 1917 and 2004, but the bulk of the collection dates from after the mid-1960s. After completing his education and serving in the United States Navy, William Scott Chilton began teaching at the University of Washington. He moved to Washington University-St. Louis before beginning his employment in North Carolina State University's Botany Department in 1983. A natural products chemist, Chilton distinguished himself in research focused upon the phytochemistry, fungi, and plant-associate microbes, the structure of novel amino acids, and ethnobotanical uses of plants. He was well known for his research on a number of topics, including mushroom toxins, crown-gall metabolites, and the corn toxin DIMBOA. Chilton continued to teach and work in his phytochemistry lab after his retirement from NC State University in 2003. He died suddenly while hiking in August 2004. Less

This collection contains the professional papers of Stuart McGuire Noblin, including those related to his professorship at North Carolina State University, and on topics of his research, including farmers' movements, the National Grange, and the role of churches in constructive race relations. Also contained in this collection are Noblin's personal papers from his involvement in the North Carolina Chess Association. Stuart Noblin was a professor in the Departments of History and Political Science at North Carolina State University from 1947 to 1976. He also served as part-time University Archivist from 1957 to 1964, as well as chairman of the Committee on the History of the College, and was a member of the Faculty Senate from 1957 to 1961. Noblin was also active in the North Carolina Chess Association. Less
