University Archives Photograph Collection, Copy Negatives 1889-1999

North Carolina State University is a research-extensive, land grant institution located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Founded in 1887 as the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts under the auspices of the federal Morrill Act of 1862, the school held its first classes in the fall of 1889. In 1914, passage of the Smith-Lever Act created an educational partnership between land-grant colleges and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which led North Carolina to establish the Agricultural Extension Service at NC State. By the 1920s, State College (as the school was now known) was beginning to grow beyond its original agricultural and mechanical focus, adding schools of engineering, textiles, education and business, as well as a graduate school. To address issues of the Great Depression, the State of North Carolina established the Consolidated University of North Carolina in 1931. This administratively combined the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, the Woman’s College in Greensboro, and State College, which was then called North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering of the University of North Carolina. The Consolidated University of North Carolina lasted until 1972 when it was remade into the University of North Carolina (UNC) system. As of 2014, NC State is one of the seventeen constituent institutions of the UNC system.

This subgroup of the North Carolina State University Archives Photograph Collection includes approximately 600 copy negatives. The negatives depict a wide variety of subjects, with particular emphasis on the North Carolina State University campus and buildings, administrators and faculty, and athletics. There are also some negatives that depict the activities of the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service.

Original order has been maintained, though it does not represent a chronological or thematic arrangement. The content list includes information taken directly from the envelopes in which the negatives are housed. A good portion of envelopes do not include any identifying information. These are not listed in the finding aid, but they have been kept in the collection.
