The Azalea Society of America records contain administrative information, chapter information, correspondence to and from the Society, membership information, various publications, and research files. Although items in the collection date back to 1928, the bulk of information falls between 1979 and 2013. This is an ongoing collection with publications added once available. Created in 1979, the Azalea Society of America's goals include the promotion of the knowledge of and interest in azaleas and proper description and registration of azaleas. Zobel Papers contain diaries, correspondence, speeches, an autobiography, articles, awards, reports, course information, theses proposals, serials, conference and symposia information, research plans, photographs, slides, artifacts, and other materials related to Zobel's career in forestry. Included are materials relating to Zobel's work on the faculty of North Carolina State University as well as work with the Central America and Mexico Resources Cooperative (CAMCORE), the Cooperative Forest Genetics Research Program, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Marcus Wallenberg Foundation for Promoting Scientific Research in the Forest Industry, the N.C. State-Industry Cooperative Forest Tree Improvement Program, the Southern Forest Tree Improvement Committee, the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI), Zobel Forestry Associates, and other organizations. Major topics include international forest improvement programs, forest genetics, wood properties, forest management, and tropical forestry. Bruce J. Zobel (1920-2011) was an internationally respected lecturer, consultant, professor, and expert on forest genetics and forest improvement. The C. H. Kirkman Papers contains pamphlets, instructional guides, training manuals, reports, monthly newsletters, conferences, member communications, and Farmer Cooperatives Service (FCS) information and educational aids, and Cooperative Information Reports (CIR), and other items related to cooperatives and extension services from 1958 to 1985. Clark Harrison Kirkman (1920-2007) worked in agricultural extension in North Carolina, as director of member relations for Farmers Cooperative Exchange (FCX) in Raleigh, North Carolina, and as a Cooperative Education Specialist with United States Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C. Kirkman taught hundreds of workshops and training sessions on cooperatives across the United States, developed more than 55 publications of unique educational materials on cooperatives, worked with a broad network of professionals and organizations in support of cooperatives, and was instrumental in developing public/private partnerships to document the value of cooperatives in rural and community development. The Catherine Roberts Papers contain various writings relating to animal rights. These papers include a selection of Roberts's published writings, correspondence received by Roberts, and a collection of philosophical publications that contain articles written by some of her colleagues. Born in California in 1917, Catherine Roberts trained as a microbiologist and geneticist, but then turned away from a career as a scientist and dedicated herself to writing about science, ethics, and religion. The Charles J. Nusbaum Papers relate to Nusbaum's plant pathology research as well as interactions with his students at North Carolina State University. This collection contains Nusbaum's essays, publications, and reports, research correspondence, and materials from his classes. Materials related to the Tobacco Workers Conference are also included. In addition, there are photographs and slides, some pertaining to Nusbaum's research and others to his personal life. The photographs generally date from the 1930s and 1940s. The Dan U. Gerstel Papers contains numerous scientific publications on a variety of topics related to the study of genetics, cytology, plant pathology, and crop science, collected by Dan U. Gerstel during his career as a member of the faculty of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences of North Carolina State University and in the genetics department of the Weizmann Institute of Science (Mekhon Vaitsman le-mada) in Rehovot, Israel. The material is international in scope and covers a period of six decades. In addition to scientific publications, the collection contains personal and professional correspondence, a diary, genealogical research materials, newspaper clippings, and articles related to stamp collecting. Cytogeneticist Dan U. Gerstel, Ph.D., served as a professor of crop science at North Carolina State University, 1950-1980. He specialized in the study of tobacco and cotton. Less

The Donald E. Moreland Papers consist of presentations, reprints, faculty activity reports, visual aids, project descriptions, lecture notes, and laboratory procedures related to crop science, botany, toxicology, and plant physiology. Major topics include microsomes, plant and rat liver mitochondria, and herbicides. Moreland presented many of the materials at conferences, including conferences of the Weed Science Society of America. North Carolina State University Professor Emeritus Donald E. Moreland (1919-2010) served as a faculty member at North Carolina State for more than fifty years, teaching crop science, botany, forestry, and toxicology. This collection contains material documenting the career of Hayne Palmour, North Carolina State University Professor Emeritus of Ceramic Engineering. Included are biographical files, general correspondence, manuscripts, patents, administrative files, and research material generated by Palmour over a period of nearly six decades, from 1948 to 2004. Hayne Palmour began his career at North Carolina State University in 1958, retiring in 1994. During his tenure at North Carolina State, Palmour was active as a researcher, educator, advisor, and administrator. Specific research interests included mechanisms of flow and fracture in spinel structured ceramics, materials processing and rate controlled sintering, and precision digital dilatometry. His focus was in the development of processes for the firing of complex ceramics. His involvement with the international scientific and technical research community and many contributions that he made to the field of advanced ceramics engineering, the defense industry, and the world of nuclear power are documented in the collection. The John William Shirley papers consist of a 1948 letter from Shirley to Dr. J. H. Lampe, a daily log from Shirley's Soviet Field Seminar of the Comparative Education Society (1958), and the publication, "Soviet Education and Its Challenge" (1959). John William Shirley (1908 - 1988) served as an English professor and dean of the Division of Basic Studies at North Carolina State College (now North Carolina State University) from 1949 to 1955, and Dean of Faculty from 1955 to 1962. Shirley left N.C. State in 1962 to become Vice President and Provost of the University of Delaware. He received his A.B. degree from the State University of Iowa in 1932 and his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in 1937. He also took graduate classes, 1932-1933, at the University of Nebraska. Less

The North Carolina State University Entomology Department Drawings and Papers is principally a compilation of taxonomic illustrations of thousands of species of insects, 1967-1990. The illustrations are in a variety of media, mainly drawings and paintings, as well as photographs, negatives, and slides. They were produced by independent artists hired by the NC State University Entomology Department, members of the entomology faculty, and the United States Department of Agriculture. Most of the illustrations were executed for the Entomology Department in the 1970s by five primary artists. This collection also contains entomological publications, 1973-2000, primarily of the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service (later Cooperative Extension Service), edited and authored by James R. Baker. These publications are mainly pest control manuals, as well as copies of a pest control informational serial. Also included is early professional correspondence of Baker regarding entomological publications and taxonomy, 1966-1975. The illustrations in the North Carolina State University Entomology Drawings and Papers, depicting thousands of species of insects and their taxonomy, were created or collected by the NC State University Entomology Department from 1967 to 1990. James R. Baker (1941- ) was curator of the collection during his career as researcher and professor of entomology at the university from 1972 to 2000. Less

The Richard M. Felder Papers contain copies of articles that Felder authored on chemical engineering and on teaching, teaching aids, booklets, correspondence, newspaper and magazine article clippings, research files, projects reports, personal materials, text copies of presentations he gave, other miscellaneous paper files, a video of one of his presentations, and three plaques representing awards Felder received. The collection also include his kindergarten graduation certificate and honorary degrees that he received from various US Universities. The collection includes a few materials in Italian and Portuguese languages. Richard M. Felder joined the Department of Chemical Engineering at North Carolina State University in 1969. He is currently (2021) Hoechst Celanese Professor Emeritus in the department. Less

Papers and audiovisual materials documenting Scott Chilton’s botanical research, teaching career, and personal life. This includes notebooks, research and laboratory data, articles, news clippings, collected works, Chilton’s own writings and publications, course materials, correspondence, legal documents, slides, photographs, and VHS video recordings. The collection’s contents date from between 1917 and 2004, but the bulk of the collection dates from after the mid-1960s. After completing his education and serving in the United States Navy, William Scott Chilton began teaching at the University of Washington. He moved to Washington University-St. Louis before beginning his employment in North Carolina State University's Botany Department in 1983. A natural products chemist, Chilton distinguished himself in research focused upon the phytochemistry, fungi, and plant-associate microbes, the structure of novel amino acids, and ethnobotanical uses of plants. He was well known for his research on a number of topics, including mushroom toxins, crown-gall metabolites, and the corn toxin DIMBOA. Chilton continued to teach and work in his phytochemistry lab after his retirement from NC State University in 2003. He died suddenly while hiking in August 2004. Less

Created in the 1950s and originally named the Society of Technical Writers and Publishers, the Society for Technical Communication (STC) is an organization "dedicated to advancing the arts and sciences of technical communication" and "improving the quality and effectiveness of technical communication for audiences worldwide." The STC Records document the activities and personnel of this organization at both the national and chapter levels during the years 1956-1996. Less

Stanley Backer (1920-2003) attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning degrees in engineering and textile technology. He joined the faculty at M.I.T. in 1951 and eventually became the head of the Fibers and Polymers Laboratory. His research in textiles engineering led to a greater understanding of fiber structure and fabric behavior. Backer also led a program to develop one of the first online information retrieval systems, known as the Textile Information Retrieval Product. He died in 2003. Stanley Backer's papers consist of articles, books, papers, theses and other material reflecting his textile engineering research while attending and teaching at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A Research Files series contains collected information on fabric mechanics, texturing, and other topics. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology Special Program series contains material on programs in which Backer had participated. The Supervised Theses series includes those supervised by Backer while a professor at M.I.T. A series of Backer's published works is also included, as well as a list of his collected works. Less
