Charles M. Smallwood joined the Civil Engineering Department of North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in 1950 as an expert on water pollution. He received his B.S. from Case Institute of Technology in 1942 and his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1950.

The collection spans Monteith's career at North Carolina State University, including material from 1933 to 1998. It covers his tenure as undergraduate, faculty member, dean, interim Chancellor, and Chancellor at the University. The primary focuses of the collection are the Microelectronics Center of North Carolina (MCNC), his research publications as an electrical engineer, and his speeches as Chancellor. Larry King Monteith enrolled at North Carolina State University in 1956, receiving a BS (1960) in electrical engineering. He then received an MS (1962) degree and a PhD (1965) from Duke University in electrical engineering. After holding positions at Bell Telephone Laboratories, analyzing the NIKE missile system, and participating in a semiconductor research group, Monteith joined the faculty of North Carolina State University's Electrical Engineering Department. He became department head in 1974. He was named dean of the School of Engineering in 1978 and was named chancellor of North Carolina State University in May 1990 after serving as interim chancellor for a year. Monteith retired in 1998.

In 1987 the School was renamed the College of Engineering.

These files also relate to the College's sponsors of research, including the United States Army, Navy, and Air Force, the National Aeronautic and Space Administration, North Carolina Department of Transportation, and the National Science Foundation. The Analytical Instrumentation Facility (AIF) at NC State is the primary research facility for materials characterization on campus. The roots of AIF are in the Engineering Experiment Station, established at NC State in 1923. The Experiment Station became the Engineering Research Department in 1945, and that unit became the Engineering Research Division in 1971. The Engineering Research Division informally became known as the Analytical Instrumentation Facility during the 1981-1982 fiscal year. That designation had become official by the 1990s.

Courses in chemistry have been taught at North Carolina State University NC State University) since the school was opened in 1889 as the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts (A&M). During President George Tayloe Winston's tenure (1899-1908) the curriculum in applied science was changed to chemical engineering. In 1899 a program leading to a degree of Chemical Engineer was introduced. In 1924, the Department of Chemical Engineering was formed by Dr. E. E. Randolph. In 2004, the department was officially renamed the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering.

The collection includes correspondence, reports, reprints, and photographs pertaining to courses and curricula, equipment and travel expenses, the Department of Geology, ceramics, clay and bricks. Also included is material pertaining to organizations such as the Foundry educational Foundation, Geological Society of North America, the North Carolina Academy of Sciences, and Sigma Xi. Financial and grant records are also included. The origins of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering lie in the Departments of Geology and Mineral Industries Engineering. Only in 1972 did the University create a discrete Materials Engineering Department, which became the Materials Science and Engineering Department in 1986.
