This collection primarily contains letters from Azariah Graves Thompson (1885-1963) to his family in Leasburg, North Carolina, from 1905 to 1909, while he was a student at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University); a print bill entitled "Regulations for Dormitories at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts"; a typed transcription of reminiscences written in about 1900 by Thompson's mother, Ella Williams Graves Thompson; and a typed transcription of "A History of Leasburg with Personal Recollections," 1960, written by his sister, Ella Graves Thompson. Also included are photographs and typed transcriptions of the letters and some notes, 1997, on local and family history by Jeannine D. Whitlow. The Gerald Katzin Notebooks collection, circa 1960-1974, contains Gerald Katzin's class notebooks for physics and mathematics classes. These notebooks include homework and notes on such topics as electromagnetism, kinetic theory, and boundary values. Some have NC State's seal and printed text on the cover indicating they were purchased from the university's student supply store. The collection also includes a compass used for drawing circles and arcs. Gerald "Jerry" Katzin was born on August 2, 1932 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina to Nathan and Bertha Kolodny Katzin. He was a physics student at NC State University during the 1950s and early 1960s. After he earned his Ph.D. in Physics at NC State, he became a professor at State and taught physics until he retired. His most significant research included work on curvature collineations. Katzin died on December 14, 2020 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Less

This collection contains newsclippings collected by Howard Snyder and which concern the 1929 merger of the Pennsylvania State Forest School in Mont Alto, Pa., with the Pennsylvania State College. Some clippings have been mounted on pages separated from a scrapbook. Also contained in the collection is Snyder's red wool jacket from his time at North Carolina State College (now North Carolina State University). On the left breast pocket is an emblem that reads "NCS 30." Howard Aden Snyder graduated from North Carolina State College (now North Carolina State University) in 1930 with a B. S. in Forestry. He was in the first graduating class of the college's new forestry program. During the previous year he was one of approximately 50 students who came to NCC State from the Pennsylvania State Forest School in Mont Alto, Pennsylvania. They were unhappy with the merger of that school with Pennsylvania State College. Less

The James Craig Edsall Papers contain examinations, quizzes, laboratory exercises, problem sets, syllabi, course handouts, and class notes, 1969-1974, when Edsall was an undergraduate student in industrial engineering at North Carolina State University. The collection also includes some personal materials, 1968-1977, from Edsall's student years. The Joseph Alfred Miller Papers contain items from Miller's student days (1900-1904) at the college that eventually became NC State University. Included are the jacket and caps of his cadet uniform; photographs showing student life, athletics, and campus buildings; student publications; and one of his engineering textbooks. A few of the photos show Miller's future wife Ella Duckett and his college roommate William Joel Patton. Some of the student publications and the textbook contain his marginalia (the textbook contains a note about Professor Carl Riddick). The collection also contains some college publications from the 1930s when other Miller family members attended NC State, and this includes athletics programs. Joseph Alfred Miller (1883-1949) of Brevard, North Carolina, graduated from North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (abbreviated A & M and later renamed North Carolina State University) in 1904. This collection contains material relating to the scholastic life of Martha Bailey Hawkins Andrews at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) from 1925 to 1933. It also includes material that documents the history of North Carolina State University. Materials are in the format of class notes, course syllabi, course notebooks, newspaper clippings, and correspondence as well as photographs. Martha Bailey Hawkins Andrews was one of the first women at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University), graduating in 1929 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. The Mary Yarbrough Papers (circa 1850-2005) contain 24.5 linear feet of correspondence, photographs, publications, music books, news clippings, photocopies, and artifacts. Most of these materials document Yarbrough's life and career, as well as her family history. Mary Elizabeth Yarbrough (1904-1984) was one of the first women to receive a graduate degree (M.S. in chemistry, 1927) from North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University). Mary Yarbrough served on the faculty of Meredith College for many years (1929-1972). In 1941 she received a Ph.D. and Phi Beta Kappa key at Duke University. At Meredith College she headed the chemistry and physics department, and she became an assistant director of the cooperative education program. Less

The Walter Austin Bullock and George Tarry Bullock letters consist of letters written by the brothers to members of their family when they were students at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University). They contain details about various events, including the November 1891 football game between Wake Forest College and "the University" (possibly UNC Chapel Hill), the 1891 State Fair, the farm work they did for the college and the professors, and getting uniforms. Williamsboro, N.C., natives Walter Austin Bullock and George Tarry Bullock entered North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) as freshmen in 1891. Walter graduated with an agricultural degree in 1895, and then worked for a big farming concern near Bainbridge, Ga. He then moved to Puerto Rico, where he raised shade tobacco for American Tobacco Company. He and George later bought a large farm near Red Springs, N.C., which was very successful until 1922, when the price of cotton dropped. He continued farming on a smaller scale until his death in 1943. Due to illness and financial problems, George did not complete his college coursework. After leaving North Carolina State, he worked at Edgecombe Test Farm, and then worked in Georgia and Puerto Rico. After the Red Springs farm failed, he returned to Puerto Rico and worked for the American Sugar Cane Company. He then went to Cuba with the Cuban Land and Leaf Tobacco Company, a subsidiary of American Tobacco Company. He stayed in Cuba until his retirement in 1952. He died in Red Springs in 1955. Less

The papers in this collection pertain to William Mitchell Cates's undergraduate career at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University). A variety of coursework is represented, including a report on the operation of the Panama Canal, graded business letters, handouts on the economics of electric companies and original problem sets, as well as Cates's work on these problems in the form of computations, charts, graphs, notes, and exams. This collection also contains materials relating to Cates’s registration and housing, university publications, and other engineering-related publications. All the materials are handwritten, printed, mimeographs, or blue Photostat copies, and are dated 1927 to 1936. The bulk of the collection dates from 1929 to 1932. A native of Millboro, North Carolina, William Mitchell Cates attended the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) from 1928 to 1932. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering in June 1932. Less
