The Department of Soil Science at North Carolina State University had its beginnings with courses in agronomy that were first offered during the 1889-1890 academic year. Soil Science remained a program within the Department of Agronomy until that department was split into the Department of Field Crops and the Department of Soils. The Department of Soils became the Department of Soil Science in 1962.
