MoreThe Jesse P. Spoon Letters are ten letters documenting Spoon's life as a student at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now North Carolina State University). The letters are addressed to Robert A. Coble of Oakdale, North Carolina, who was Spoon's classmate at what Spoon calls "Oakdale School." This may refer to Oakdale Academy, which was a preparatory school in Alamance County. Spoon discusses military training, classes, and social receptions at the college, as well as other notable events like measles outbreaks. There is also some discussion of events in Oakdale, a community in the Patterson Township of Alamance County, North Carolina. The first seven letters were written from January to April 1903, with the following three being from March and May of 1904. Jesse Page Spoon was born on 20 January 1883 in Alamance County, North Carolina. He may have attended preparatory school at Oakdale Academy. In 1902 or 1903, he began attending North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now North Carolina State University), where he earned a Bachelors of Agriculture in May 1908 and a Master of Science in 1909.
