There is also a transcription from a tape of Thomas' remarks to deans, directors, and department heads at the time of his resignation as chancellor and the announcement of his appointment as president of the University of Alabama (1981 March 25). The collection also includes items from Thomas's earlier career at the University of Alabama, particularly letters of congratulation upon his appointment as Vice President of Student Affairs in 1974. Joab Langston Thomas was the chancellor of North Carolina State University from 1976 to 1981, president of the University of Alabama from 1981 to 1988, professor at the University of Alabama from 1961 to 1975, and vice president for Student Affairs at the University of Alabama from 1974 to 1975. Thomas received his A.B., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in botany from Harvard University. He passed away on March 3, 2014 at the age of 81.
