The University Archives Photograph Collection, College of Engineering Photographs, 1915-1993, mainly includes photographs of the faculty, staff, and students of various departments within the College of Engineering. A significant number of photographs documents research studies and laboratory work and equipment. Also included are photographs of award ceremonies, presentations and conferences, campus buildings, and promotional materials.
Engineering classes have been taught since the first semester at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now North Carolina State University) in 1889. During the next few decades, specialized engineering curricula were developed, and the first engineering departments were formed. In 1923 these were all brought together under the School of Engineering. Subsequent development has resulted in additional departments, centers, and degree programs. During the 1980s the school became the College of Engineering.

The photographs are not arranged at the item level.

Photographs in the Chemical Engineering series include cap and gown group pictures of chemical engineering graduates, students, faculty, equipment, research and laboratory work associated with the department.
Photographs in the Civil and Industrial Engineering series include students, faculty, equipment, and research and laboratory work associated with the department. This series also includes photographs of the furniture curriculum from the 1920s to 1960s.
Photographs in the Electrical Engineering series include students, faculty, equipment, and research and laboratory work associated with the department.
Photographs in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering series include students, faculty, equipment, and research and laboratory work associated with the department. This series also includes photographs of aircraft and a wind tunnel.
Photographs in the Materials Science and Ceramic series include students, faculty, equipment, and research and laboratory work associated with the department. This series also includes photographs of a ceramics conference from 1960.
Photographs in the Nuclear Engineering and Physics series include students, faculty, and research and laboratory work associated with the department. This series also includes photographs of the nuclear reactor, nuclear short courses, and x-ray equipment.
Photographs in the Continuing Education and Related Programs series include Gaston Tech; the Mineral Research Laboratory; Diesel, Geological, and Coastal Engineering; as well as the Mathematics Department and summer institutes.
Photographs in the Faculty series include the advisory council, portraits of faculty and staff members, such as Dean Ralph Fadum, and general photographs of faculty not identified by department.
Photographs in the Academics and Students series include classroom scenes, images of foreign students and women in the engineering program, general student life, and graduation ceremonies.
Photographs in the Gifts and Awards series include student and faculty award ceremonies, honorary degree conferrals, and presentations of gifts and checks.
Photographs in the Conferences and Events series include conferences for African Americans and women in engineering, symposia and lectures, meetings, and related social events.
Photographs in the Labs and Research series include the equipment, machinery, laboratory space, and research studies pertaining to the College of Engineering. The photographs in this series are mostly unlabeled and therefore not identified with a specific department within the College.
Photographs in the Extension Services series include workshops, people, and activities related to the Industrial Extension Services program.
The Publicity and Promotional Material series contains photographs, brochures, flyers, artwork, and cutlines for promoting the College of Engineering and the University.
Photographs in the Exhibitions series include expositions, displays at the State Fair, presentations, and shows relating to the College of Engineering.
