Zeigler Papers, 1962-2017, consists of files containing technical reports and early journal articles from when Zeigler was a graduate student and assistant professor at the University of Michigan. It also includes files from unpublished books, as well as presentations and related materials. Bernard P. Zeigler is Professor Emeritus of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Arizona. In 1962, he received a B.S. in Engineering Physics from McGill University in Montreal, Canada, an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1964, and a Ph.D. in Computer/Communication Sciences from the University of Michigan in 1968. Zeigler is best known for his theoretical work concerning modeling and simulation performed according to general systems theory, and is well published in his field. He has held faculty appointments at the University of Michigan (1969-1975, 1980-1981), the Weizmann Institute in Israel (1975-1980), Wayne State University (1981-1984), The University of Arizona (1985-2010), and Arizona State University (2005-2008). While in Arizona, Zeigler served as Co-Director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Modeling and Simulation (ACIMS). Brian W. Hollocks is a retired Professor of Management Science and Information Systems at Bournemouth University and was the INTEL Chair in Computer-Supported Co-operation. He is a Chartered (Mechanical) Engineer and holds a Ph.D. in Management Science from Southampton University. He taught and researched on simulation, computer-supported cooperative work, knowledge management, and artificial intelligence. The Bruce Schmeiser Papers, circa 1923-2014, document various aspects of Dr. Schmeiser's work in the field of computer simulation, where he has made notable contributions to simulation theory, methodology, and various forms of practical applications. He had been a leader in initiating and sustaining the primary ongoing activities of the INFORMS Simulation Society and the Winter Simulation Conference (WSC). Dr. Bruce Schmeiser received his B.A. in mathematical sciences from the University of Iowa (1969), his MS in industrial and management engineering from the University of Iowa (1971), and his Ph.D. from the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech (1975). Upon completing his Ph.D., Schmeiser worked as an assistant professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research at Southern Methodist University (1975-1978), later becoming an associate professor in the same department (1978-1979). Schmeiser took an associate professorship within the School of Industrial Engineering at Purdue University (1979-1984), later becoming a full professor in the same department (1984-2012). Dr. Schmeiser is a Fellow of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) and a recipient of the I-Sim Distinguished Service Award (1997) and the David F. The Computer Simulation Oral History Archive, 2003-2018, includes video and audio interviews of computer simulation pioneers. The video oral histories of computer simulation pioneers were funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and were conducted from 2013-2016. The purpose of this grant initiative was to capture and preserve accounts of seminal projects, related pivotal events, and distinguished project contributors from the perspectives of, and the words of, individuals who witnessed the relevant history of computer simulation firsthand. The importance of collecting these accounts is also based on the remarkable degree to which computer simulation has heavily influenced the design of computing software. The Computer Simulation Oral History Archive is a part of the Computer Simulation Archive, which was established in 1998 with substantial initial donations of papers and research materials by three pioneers in the field of computer simulation—Robert G. Sargent, Alan Pritsker, and Julian Reitman. The Computer Simulation Oral History Archive includes interviews conducted from 2003-2016, almost all of which were funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation. Computer simulation was established as a separate discipline of research and practice during the mid-1950s, with many seminal works in the field published from the mid-1950s to the early 1970s. Reflecting the diverse backgrounds of the field’s pioneers, simulation encompasses theory, methodology, and practice arising at the interface of applied probability, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, industrial and systems engineering, management, manufacturing engineering, operations research, and statistics. The roots of the computer simulation field are revealed in the broad diversity of current application domains in which the development and use of large-scale computer simulation models are critical to the design, improvement, and operational control of computer and telecommunications networks, financial systems, healthcare delivery systems, transportation systems, and governmental and military systems. The field comprises discrete-event simulation, Monte Carlo methods, combined discrete-continuous simulation as well as hybrid analytic/simulation computer models. It is noteworthy that as the field has matured, it has contributed significantly to the evolution of allied disciplines—for example, object-oriented programming in computer science and innovative resampling schemes in statistics. The collection discusses General Purpose Simulation Systems (GPSS) and its derivatives -- Micro-GPSS and WebGPSS. Ingolf Ståhl is professor emeritus of the Stockholm School of Economics. Ståhl began teaching computer simulation in 1976. Since then, he has instructed over 7,000 university and high school students in five countries. Initially, Ståhl's courses featured General Purpose Simulation Systems (GPSS) language. Later, he collaborated with Henry Herper and Richard G. The James O. Henriksen Papers contain letters and correspondence, software-related lectures, articles, books, and other materials related to James O. Henriksen's career in computer simulation and computer science from the early 1960s into the 2000s. The collection provides information on the program that Henriksen created called GPSS/H, his other endeavors related to computer simulation, and some information about his company, Wolverine Software. The materials in this collection also show Henriksen's involvement with other indivuduals in the field of computer simulation, his time as a teacher, and correspondence from users of his GPSS/H software. Materials range from 1963 to 2016. James "Jim" O. Henriksen (1945-2019) was the founder and CEO of Wolverine Software Corporation, which he established in 1976. During his career, he developed GPSS/H for IBM mainframes in 1977, enabling the continuing support of a major simulation programming language. The first commercial installation of GPSS/H was made at General Motors Manufacturing Department, and in the following years the application was expanded and improved. Wolverine also developed other software innovations, including Proof Animation, which was introduced in 1989, and SLX, the extensible simulation language, a later product. Less

This collection consists mainly of budget reports and conference proceedings digests from Winter Simulation Conferences, 1968-1998. Additionally there are technical reprints and operational manuals used by Reitman when he was employed by the Norden Division of United Aircraft Corporation. Julian Reitman was the leader of one of the first simulation application groups in industry at the Norden Division of United Aircraft Corporation. They created numerous simulation models of real systems including naval vessel performance, anti-submarine warfare, effectiveness of airborne radar, railed automated highways, air traffic control, message switching in communications, and yield prediction for integrated circuit production. Reitman also was one of the founders of the Winter Simulation Conference (WSC) in 1968. Roth earned degrees from the University of Pittsburgh (Physics) and the University of Pennsylvania (Engineering). He retired from Virginia Tech as Associate Professor of Computer Science. During his career he also taught at Villanova University, the University of Maryland, and the University of South Florida. Roth was a pioneer in the field of Computer Simulation and was twice elected as Chairman of the Association for Computing Machinery's simulation sub-group. His career also included affiliation with the National Bureau of Standards, the Burroughs Corporation, Goodyear Aircraft, the Department of Energy, the Department of Commerce, and General Electric (Missile and Space Division). Other papers include conference brochures, contracts, correspondence, and writings by others. Philip J. Kiviat is the author of two books on simulation programming languages (SIMSCRIPT II and GASP) and numerous technical papers. The “Kiviat Graph” is widely used in the computer hardware and software performance field, as well as in other disciplines, to portray performance patterns and distinguish modes of behavior. Kiviat was the first technical Director of the Federal Computer Performance Evaluation and Simulation Center (FEDSIM) that was established by the United States Air Force in 1972. Less

Richard E. Nance received his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering in 1962 from North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University), followed by a Master of Science in 1964. Nance completed his Ph.D. at Purdue in 1968 and soon established himself as a founding leader in the field of computer simulation research. This transcript of a radio broadcast program, "Insight", contains a conversation between William Hines, a science editor of The Washington Star, and Dr. Joseph Coker, the Director of the National Resource Evaluation Center. Hines interviews Dr. Coker about how the National Resource Evaluation Center (NREC) uses data on personnel, national resources, materials, and more in order to create computer simulations of how a nuclear attack would affect U.S. infrastructure and resources. Dr. Joseph Daniel Coker (c.1912-1998) received both a doctorate in economics and a law degree from George Washington University. He served in the Navy during WWII on the U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey Ships' Bombardment section. Post-war, he went on to work for the State Department and Air Force, where he oversaw outside contract research. Coker was instrumental in the establishment of the National Resource Evaluation Center (NREC) and served as its director until his retirement in 1968. The NREC was part of the Office of Emergency Planning, and Coker was considered a leading official in the U.S. Atomic Preparedness programs. His work at the NREC included adapating computer technologies to calculate the effects of nuclear weapons against the United States. Dr. Coker died on Nov. 8, 1998 of stomach cancer. Less

Tocher (1921-1981) was a computer scientist who contributed to the field of computer simulation. He earned degrees from University College London (1941) and the University of London (1946) and the Imperial College London (1952). He worked for United Steel Companies and developed the first discrete-event simulation package, the General Simulation Program (GSP). He was a professor of operational research at the University of Southampton and was awarded the silver medal of the Operational Research Society in 1967.
