Faculty teach better with Libraries course-based instruction

Welcome back, NC State faculty! With the fall semester upon us, we’d like to remind you that the Libraries has a robust teaching program, and librarians are available to work with your students as they build their research competency, data literacy, media creation skills, and more.

Please fill out the Instruction Request Form or email us at library_instruction@ncsu.edu, and we will work together to plan the most appropriate instruction session for your students.

The Libraries offers a wide variety of instructional programs:

Discipline-Specific Research Instruction
Subject librarians can provide discipline-specific research instruction tailored to your course content and/or assignment, including but not limited to: citation management, literature searching/reviews, and research methods and strategy. You can request this instruction using our instruction request form or by contacting your subject librarian.

Research Instruction for Writing and Speaking Programs
The Libraries offers information literacy instruction sessions specifically designed for novice researchers in introductory writing and speaking courses (i.e., ENG 101, COM 110). Visit the Libraries’ page on Writing and Speaking Instruction for more information on lesson plans or to schedule a session. We also have assignment or skill-based online Moodle modules to supplement our in-person sessions.

Data & Visualization
Do you or your students need help finding data, creating charts, analyzing data, or making maps? Data and visualization librarians provide instruction sessions on visualization design principles and introductory to advanced use of data analysis and visualization tools for tabular data (spreadsheets), statistics and coding (Python and R), GIS applications, and more. Special Collections Research Center
Librarians in our Special Collections Research Center will work with you to design an interactive class session or assignment integrating archival materials, oral histories, rare books, and other original materials from our collections. The Studios
Our Studios staff is ready to enhance your class with alternative assignments and outputs from our Makerspace, Gaming and VR studio, Media booths, Gaming and Esports Lab, and more! Examples of our available instruction include 3D printing, low-fidelity prototyping, songwriting, podcast-making, or creating VR experiences. No matter the discipline, level of expertise, technical or creative focus, we offer our knowledge and experience to help you integrate hands-on learning in your courses, in-person or online. Learn more about makerspace, media, gaming and esports, and virtual reality instruction.

Innovation Studio
The Innovation Studio is an exhibition space for sharing student work with a broader audience, in ongoing exhibits and/or one-time events. Our interactive projection tables can display media (text, video, and audio) and can incorporate physical or interactive creations. Student showcase events in this adaptable space can take many different forms, depending on your content and goals. Our team also teaches a workshop, “Critical Play with Generative AI,” which incorporates hands-on collaboration with AI and reflective discussion. High-Tech Spaces
Create unique and immersive learning experiences in one of the Libraries' High-Tech Spaces—the Cyma Rubin Visualization Gallery at the Hill Library and The Landing and Teaching & Visualization Lab and at the Hunt Library. In these spaces, students and instructors can host virtual tours of far-off places, display large amounts of data, explore and annotate high-resolution scans of rare books, create immersive presentations, and so much more. Libraries staff will provide support and guidance throughout the planning and creation process.
