New Visualization Studio coming to the Hill Library this fall

Part of the larger renovation, the Viz Studio will feature immersive research and scholarly work

Dynamic visualization makes research and scholarly work impactful. Opening in fall 2020, the Hill Library’s new Visualization Studio will showcase and facilitate student and faculty work from all disciplines in a dazzling, immersive space.

Featuring 360-degree projection and surround sound capabilities in a round, 29-foot-wide projection room, the Visualization Studio’s unique design will allow faculty, staff, and students to display and experience uniquely immersive content.

“The new Visualization Studio will give faculty and students the opportunity to explore the visual world—from Neolithic tombs in the Orkney Islands to modern comic books,” says Shaun Bennett, Research Librarian for Business, Education, & Data Literacy. “Patrons will be able to explore unique visuals, present their own material in an immersive environment, or simply enjoy events designed to share interesting research on campus.”

The 360-degree projection will be run by a high-powered PC with standard presentation and media production software and will also support the presentation of 360-degree virtual environments and web-based content. Students and faculty will work directly with specially trained Libraries staff to develop highly impactful presentations and instruction.

Visualization Studio services will include in-person technology consultations for the development and presentation of immersive content. This could include course-based projects and instruction sessions, research communication, public events, or other special programs. NC State faculty, students, and staff users will not need specific technical expertise or to have a fully formed idea to request a consultation in the space.

About the Hill Library renovation
The major renovation underway at the Hill Library is scheduled to open in fall 2020. With the goal of enhancing student and faculty success, this project features a new Academic Success Center and new technology-rich Libraries spaces—including the Visualization Studio, Data Experience Lab, and Innovation Studio—making the Hill Library NC State's one-stop hub for learning, teaching, research, collaboration, and experimentation. The project also includes a complete renovation of the second and third floors of the bookstacks tower and a new open stairwell that will connect those floors with the Ask Us lobby. Visit the Hill Renovation site for information and updates about the entire project.
