Building Access & Facilities

Restrooms

Gender-Neutral Restrooms

Two gender-inclusive, single-occupant restrooms are located on the first floor in the main lobby across from the Ask Us Center (see map).

ADA-Accessible Restrooms 

All public restrooms on the first, second, and third floors of the Hill Library are ADA-accessible.

Accessible Entrances

There are three entrances to the Hill Library- one from the Brickyard (on the ground/basement floor), one from the Hillsborough Street entrance (on the first floor) and an entrance from the Patterson parking lot which requires special access. Elevators

There are elevators available for navigating to the upper floors from all entrances. Note that not all elevators can access every floor.

Lactation Rooms

The D. H. Hill Jr. Library has an accessible lactation rooms. Access to the room requires a key code and is lockable from the inside.

Sensory Maps

Our sensory maps of the Hill Library are designed for users who are looking for study spaces that fit their sensory needs. The maps highlight spaces that have natural or warm lighting, tend to be quiet, or tend to be uncrowded.

Technology & Services

Assistive Technologies

Assistive technologies in the Hill Library are available in the Assistive Technologies Center (ATC). The center provides technologies to facilitate library research and alternate format access to library materials for users with a variety of vision, hearing, and/or mobility-related disabilities. The ATC is available whenever the Library is open (Hill Library hours).

How to access the ATC

No appointment is necessary. If you'd like an orientation to the ATC (optional), you can schedule an appointment with a library staff member by calling 919-515-3364.

Technologies include screen reading software, text-to-speech (literacy support) software, magnification software, scanning equipment, Braille technology, and speech recognition software. A list of all assistive devices and assistive software is also available.

Book Retrieval

Books can be requested (placed on hold) and retrieved for pick-up from the Ask Us desk through the Catalog

You can also request books from other institutions through our TripSaver service. 

Wheelchairs

Wheelchairs are available near the Hillsborough Street entrance on the first floor and outside the Friends of the Libraries office, first floor, East Wing. Feel free to call ahead (919-515-3364) so we can meet you at the entrance.
