MoreThe Richard C. Bell Drawings and Other Materials, 1924-2017, document the professional activities of landscape architect Richard C. Bell. The collection consists of landscape plans and planting details, prospective elevations, technical drawings, and web content, as well as associated architecture plans created by partnering architectural firms. A small number of project files, which document both residential and public spaces, are also found in the collection. Bell’s projects include private residences, subdivision developments, municipal and civic structures, various businesses, and some two dozen college and universities. Richard C. (Richard Chevalier) Bell (1928- ), a native of Manteo, N.C., received a degree in landscape architecture from North Carolina State University's College of Design (then, the North Carolina State College School of Design) in 1950. Afterwards, he apprenticed under Simonds & Simonds of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Frederick B. Stresau of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. At the age of 21, he became the youngest designer to receive the Prix de Rome, allowing him to study in Europe for two years. He became a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome. In 1954, Bell became a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and he was elected to Fellowship in the organization in 1980. In 1955, Bell founded his first firm in Raleigh, N.C., and for many years operated the business from its award-winning office space, Water Garden Office Park. His son-in-law Dennis Glazener worked for the firm, and eventually became a partner. Bell retired in 2007.

Anderson is a Professor Emeritus of Science Education at North Carolina State University. In 1994 he retired after 31 years of teaching at North Carolina State University. He is a collector of materials on Ferris wheels and an ardent researcher of the Ferris wheel. Anderson authored the book Ferris Wheels: An Illustrated History, published in 1992, and he is coauthor of the 1983 children's book, Ferris Wheels as well as several science books for children. Dr. Norman Anderson produced and edited the "Ferris Wheel News."

MoreThe North Carolina State University, Athletics, Football Audiovisual Materials collection contains primarily moving image recordings of North Carolina State University varsity football games. These recordings were captured by the Department of Athletics for coaching and review purposes, and are mostly without sound, commentary, or other narration. Also included in this collection are a small number of narrated moving image recordings on the topics of NC State football and collegiate football in general, intended for airing over television stations; as well as miscellaneous footage of individual players and coaches at NC State. Materials range in date from 1937 to 2011, and some recordings are undated. In 1892, the first official football game at NC State was played against a local prep school, Raleigh Male Academy; in 1893, State played their first intercollegiate game against Tennessee. The 1895 team was the first to wear the now traditional red and white colored uniforms, a change from their original pink and blue uniforms. The first on-campus football game was played in 1907 on the field that would later become Riddick Stadium. In 1918, John Ripple becomes the first athlete at NC State to be named an All-American in any sport, and in 1978, Ted Brown becomes the first African American to be named an All-American in football. The football team adopted the nickname “Wolfpack” in 1921, although all other sports continued to use the name “Red Terrors.” In 1930, the first night game was played at Riddick Stadium, and ended in a 37-0 victory against High Point. The team was invited to their first post-season bowl game in 1947, the January 1 Gator bowl against the University of Oklahoma. On October 21 1950, the football team played their first televised game against Maryland. The new Carter Stadium (renamed Carter-Finley Stadium in 1979) opened on October 8, 1966, and in 1967, Marcus Martin became the first African American member of the football team. In 1967, the team won their first bowl game (the Liberty Bowl) against Georgia with a score of 14-7. The team won their first ACC championship in 1957.

The collection also includes a set of Merganthaler Linotype negatives from Ellertson's early career. Materials range in date from 1956 to 2022. Charles M. Ellertson (1945-2022), a typographer and typesetter, co-founded Tseng Information Systems in Durham, NC in 1980 and was vice-president of the firm until its closure in 2021, setting type for university presses throughout the U.S. Using Fontographer and later FontLab, Charles created special characters and diacritics for non-Romanized languages; his work enabled the publication of Native American research and literature. Charles was married to Barbara Williams, founder of BW&A Books, Inc., a local book design and production studio.

North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) officially became involved in athletics when it financed the school's football team in 1893, the year after the team's first unofficial games. Other sports were organized by the early twentieth century. All teams began using the nickname "Wolfpack" in 1947. As of 2006, NC State University has eleven men's and eleven women's varsity athletic teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Personal portraits and snapshots document the lives of Mattox, his wife Mary, their son Douglas, and their extended family. Also included are photographs of the town of Wendell, North Carolina, where the Mattox family lived. The collection also includes photographs taken while Mattox served in Europe during World War II. Relating to Mattox’s professional career as a photographer at North Carolina State University, there are many images of campus scenes, student and faculty portraits, and campus publications featuring Mattox’s work. Wedding photographs, miscellaneous portraits, unidentified original and copied tintypes and cartes de visite, as well as rolled 35 mm negatives are also included. While the majority of the collection is composed of photographs, there are some papers such as news clippings, correspondence, business cards, awards, brochures, and grade reports which belonged to Mattox. John Douglas Mattox, Sr. (1911-1987) was a photographer with the Visual Aids Department at North Carolina State University from 1949 to 1974. A native of Wendell, North Carolina, Mattox attended North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in the 1930s and enlisted in the Army in 1941, serving in Europe. He married the former Mary Elizabeth Davis of Columbia, South Carolina, and had a son John Douglas Mattox, Jr., called Doug. Mattox was a talented amateur musician and director of the North Carolina State University R.O.T.C. Glee Club.
