Because of the nature of certain archival formats, including digital and audio-visual materials, access will require additional advanced notice. Unless noted, digital media are not available online. Copies of unrestricted digital files will be provided for use in the SCRC Reading Room upon request. Access will be provided to use copies of unrestricted digital files rather than carrier media, such as CDs, DVDs, and floppy disks. The Charles M. Ellertson Research and Study Collection on Typography contains books, serials (including a run of The Association of American University Presses Book and Jacket Show), booklets and leaflets on graphic design, typography, fonts, and graphic designers, and some papers related to Ellertson's work in typography. The collection also includes a set of Merganthaler Linotype negatives from Ellertson's early career. Materials range in date from 1956 to 2022.

Charles M. Ellertson (1945-2022), a typographer and typesetter, co-founded Tseng Information Systems in Durham, NC in 1980 and was vice-president of the firm until its closure in 2021, setting type for university presses throughout the U.S. Using Fontographer and later FontLab, Charles created special characters and diacritics for non-Romanized languages; his work enabled the publication of Native American research and literature. Charles was married to Barbara Williams, founder of BW&A Books, Inc., a local book design and production studio.

Biographical/historical note

Charles M. Ellertson (1945-2022), a typographer and typesetter, co-founded Tseng Information Systems in Durham, NC in 1980 and was vice-president of the firm until its closure in 2021, setting type for university presses throughout the U.S. When Tseng Information Systems was first founded, Charles ran the processing equipment, and experimented with Mergenthaler fonts while learning how to create type. Using Fontographer and later FontLab, Charles eated special characters and diacritics for non-Romanized languages; his work enabled the publication of Native American research and literature. Charles was married to Barbara Williams, founder of BW&A Books, Inc., a local book design and production studio.

Tseng Information Systems became a successful typesetting company in the university press industry, partially due to Ellertson's skill in creating new typefaces. He co-authored Glossary of Typesetting Terms with Richard Eckersley. Ellertson influenced many typographers during his 30+ years with Tseng Information Systems, as can be seen in many of the books in this collection.

Additional information about book history and typography may be explored in the BASIRA Project database and its collection of Renaissance portrayals of the book.

Size: 0.125 linear feet (Half of one cd box.)

This series contains a variety of Mergenthaler fonts on type negatives, which Charles Ellertson likely acquired in the 1980s while learning how to create type. Ellertson may have used the type negatives to experiment with methods of supplying symbols that were missing from conventional fonts, a pursuit he continued a decade later with the software Fontographer.
