A native of Duplin County, N.C., Kit Clarke was married to Lewis Clarke for a little over 20 years. She assisted in the beginning years of the practice that became Lewis Clarke Associates (LCA) with bookkeeping, typing plant lists, correspondence, and payroll. In the 1970s, Clarke opened Reader’s Corner, a famous second hand bookstore in Raleigh. She sold the business in the 1990s and is retired.
