Innovative work and teaching will shine in the Hill Library's new Innovation Studio

Exhibits will come alive through a four-projector array with integrated depth sensors as shown in this technology demonstration.

NC State’s “Think and Do” culture has helped make its students and faculty rank among the nation’s most innovative. The Hill Library’s new Innovation Studio, opening in fall 2020, will showcase that innovative work and provide a platform for teaching methods of innovation to the campus community.

The Innovation Studio will be a new type of learning space for the Libraries, featuring interactive exhibits of groundbreaking student and faculty work and offering a full slate of workshops and events to teach about tools and methods that spark innovation.

Exhibits will come alive through a four-projector array with integrated depth sensors, powered by a custom software platform. With the capability to combine digital content with physical artifacts, this space will make student and faculty exhibits interactive and immersive.

Innovation Studio staff will develop curriculum, teach workshops, and support instructors in teaching innovation within their courses. The Libraries will collaborate with campus partners on events supporting the teaching and showcasing of innovative student and faculty work. A projection and sound system will be available for talks, hands-on workshops, and other gatherings.

“The Innovation Studio is meant to celebrate and catalyze innovation on campus,” says Adam Rogers, the Libraries’ Head of Making and the Innovation Studio. “With our interactive exhibits, we'll be showcasing innovative projects from across NC State's many disciplines. And with our events and workshops, we hope to grow NC State students' understanding of innovation and its role in society, spur their creative thinking, and give them tools and methods for bringing innovation to their academic and other work.”

About the Hill Library renovation
The major renovation underway at the Hill Library is scheduled to open in fall 2020. With the goal of enhancing student and faculty success, this project features a new Academic Success Center and new technology-rich Libraries spaces—including the Innovation Studio, Data Experience Lab, and Visualization Studio—making the Hill Library NC State's one-stop hub for learning, teaching, research, collaboration, and experimentation. The project also includes a complete renovation of the second and third floors of the bookstacks tower and a new open stairwell that will connect those floors with the Ask Us lobby. Visit the Hill Library Renovation site for information and updates about the entire project.
