This collection contains technical bulletins from the Calco Chemcial Division of the American Cyanamid Company and Courtaulds Limited, which manufactured Courtelle. The dates of the bulletins range from 1937 to 1988. New Jersey’s Calco Chemical Company was founded in 1915 at a site close to the town of Bound Brook, New Jersey, almost adjacent to the Raritan River, to manufacture coal-tar intermediates required to make synthetic dyestuffs. After 1918, Calco also successfully embarked on the manufacture of synthetic dyestuffs by processes that were far more complex than hitherto used in American chemical industry. After 1945, American Cyanamid’s Calco Chemical Division specialized in vat dyestuffs, fluorescent whitening agents, polyurethane and acrylic polymers, and the invention of herbicides. In 1993, Cyanamid finished its transformation from a chemical to a drug and agricultural products company. Courtelle was an acrylic fabric resembling wool that was developed and manufactured by Courtaulds Ltd., a United Kingdom-based manufacturer of fabric, clothing, artificial fibers, and chemicals. The Institute of Textile Technology Lab Manual for Advanced Knits collection contains the laboratory manual for the Advanced Knits course in the Institute of Textile Technology from Spring 1994. The manual contains exercises in operating a master sampler circular machine, an OVJA 24 double knit machine, a TM single knit machine, a TM double knit machine, and a four track single knit machine. Samples of created fabrics are also included. This collection contains notebooks created by James V. Pomeroy. Included are pattern samples, textile samples, and instructional illustrations from Pomeroy's time at the Philadelphia Textile School. While the materials span the time period 1898 to 1901, most documents date from 1899 to 1900. Topics covered include textiles, textile fabrics and machinery, carding, spinning, and weaving. James Voorhees Pomeroy entered into the Philadelphia Textile School (established 1884) in 1899 as part of the First Year Regular Day Class. Pomeroy received honorable mentions for the Silver Medal for General Excellence and for the Bronze Medal for Best Results in Color Harmony and Figured Design in 1899. In 1900, upon entering into the Second Year Day Class, Pomeroy was awarded the Prize Scholarship for the 1900-1901 school year. On June 6, 1901, he received his diploma from the textile school. He also earned the New England Cotton Manufacturers' Association Medal for General Excellence for Entire Course the same year. Less

The majority of the collection consists of notebooks and textbooks of Ralph Robertson Powell's when he was a student in the North Carolina State College School of Textiles (later North Carolina State University College of Textiles) from 1932 to 1936. A fabric analysis workbook, and note pages on fabric structure, dyeing, and other textiles subjects are included. Also included are materials relating to Powell's involvement in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) and a loom machine manual authored by Powell and published by Cannon Mills in 1955. Specimens Illustrating the Lecture by Professor W.H. Perkin on the Permanent Fireproofing of Cotton Goods, 1912 contains a booklet of textile samples produced for the International Congress of Applied Chemistry in New York. The specimens demonstrate the fireproof capabilities of fabrics, as developed and presented by W.H. (William Henry) Perkin at the 1912 Congress. Fabric and thread samples are included. Thomas Roy Hart (1890-1956) obtained bachelor's degrees in Engineering and Textiles Engineering from North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts.
