The Banks Talley Papers consists of personal and professional papers of Dr. Banks C. Talley, Jr. This collection contains correspondence, diaries, newspaper clippings, photographs, agendas, and other documents dated from 1922-2012, though the bulk of the materials are from 1969-1983. The professional papers are from Dr. Talley's position as Dean of Students and Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs at NC State University, and from his position as executive assistant to North Carolina Governor Jim Hunt. Included are two diaries kept by Talley during the time that he worked for the governor. Banks C. Talley, Jr., 1926-2017, was born in Bennettsville, South Carolina, in 1926. After military service in World War II, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned a B.A. in history (1950), an M.A. (1956), and a Ph.D in education (1966). In 1951 he became assistant dean of students at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University). He later served as coordinator and director of student activities, associate dean and dean of student affairs, and finally vice chancellor for student affairs, beginning in 1974. The Joab L. Thomas Papers include a copy of A Resolution of Commendation for Chancellor Joab L. Thomas, passed unanimously by the Student Senate (1981 April 15). There is also a transcription from a tape of Thomas' remarks to deans, directors, and department heads at the time of his resignation as chancellor and the announcement of his appointment as president of the University of Alabama (1981 March 25). The collection also includes items from Thomas's earlier career at the University of Alabama, particularly letters of congratulation upon his appointment as Vice President of Student Affairs in 1974. Joab Langston Thomas was the chancellor of North Carolina State University from 1976 to 1981, president of the University of Alabama from 1981 to 1988, professor at the University of Alabama from 1961 to 1975, and vice president for Student Affairs at the University of Alabama from 1974 to 1975. Thomas received his A.B., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in botany from Harvard University. He passed away on March 3, 2014 at the age of 81. Less

The North Carolina State University College (previously, School) of Veterinary Medicine was established in 1978. Dr. Terrence Curtin became the first dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine in 1979. The School of Veterinary Medicine admitted its first class of students in August 1981, dedicated its main facility in April 1983, and graduated its first class of veterinarians in May 1985. Less

The Study Commission on University Government Records includes meeting minutes, reports, research materials, and memos related to the committee's effort to reimagine the system of university governance in place at North Carolina State University. There is also a limited amount of correspondence. Given the nature of the collection, duplicates exist throughout. Materials date from 1966 to 1974, but the bulk of the materials fall between 1971 and 1973, the years of the Commission's activities. The Study Commission on University Government worked from 1971 to 1973 to address the concerns of faculty, students and administrators regarding the structure and processes of internal university governance. Chancellor John Tyler Caldwell specifically tasked the Commission with developing recommendations on mechanisms for the establishment of policies. The Commission's report was published in May 1973. After serving as Professor of Food Science and Human Nutrition at the University of Florida, James Oblinger became Associate Dean and Director of Resident Instruction for the College of Agriculture at the University of Missouri-Columbia (1984-1986). At NC State, Oblinger served as Associate Dean and Dean of Academic Affairs for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (1986-1997), as Dean and Executive Director for Agricultural Programs for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (1997-2003), and as Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor before being named the 13th Chancellor of North Carolina State University in 2005. The Oscar Fletcher Papers contain Fletcher's journals and notes, 1992-2016, as well as his daytimers and calendars, 2000-2008, from when he was a faculty member at NC State University and dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine. The Journals and Notes cover topics that include: scholarships, committee reports, budget reports, College of Veterinary Medicine statistics, student involvement, faculty and staff development, meetings with deans and faculty members, faculty retreat notes, operational plans, senior exit interviews, and student questionnaires. Oscar Fletcher, DVM, Ph.D., was dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at NC State University from 1992 to 2004. From 2004 onwards, Fletcher served as a professor in the Department of Population Health and Pathobiology at NC State University. Fletcher is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists and a Founder Diplomate of the American College of Poultry Veterinarians. Less

Tilman document his career as assistant and associate professor at Yale University, professor of political science and dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at North Carolina State University, and other professional activities related to Southeast Asian studies. A small part of the collection, mostly slides and photographs, deals with Tilman’s personal life. The collection includes correspondence; course material, such as syllabi and lecture notes; administrative files; files relating to various professional activities; manuscripts; publications; material from a research project about Filipino identity; reference files; personal files including those related to his wife Jo Tilman; audiovisual material such as video cassettes, tape reels, slides and photographs; artifacts; and computer-related material. Tilman (1929-1987) was professor of political science, 1971-1987; dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 1971-1984; and founder of the North Carolina Japan Center at North Carolina State University. The North Carolina State University College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Photographs, 1963-2002 and undated, include black and white photographs of classrooms; students; faculty, administration, and staff; various labs and equipment; events; and other programs and activities associated with the college's five departments. Of particular note are the photographs of the computer lab and an early photograph of the construction of the North Carolina State University nuclear reactor. In 1960, the departments of Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and Experimental Statistics joined to form the School of Physical Sciences and Applied Mathematics. In 1965, the Dept. of Biochemistry was formed within the school. The school became the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences in 1987. As of 2008, the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences includes five major programs.
