The papers of Robert O. Tilman document his career as assistant and associate professor at Yale University, professor of political science and dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at North Carolina State University, and other professional activities related to Southeast Asian studies. A small part of the collection, mostly slides and photographs, deals with Tilman’s personal life. The collection includes correspondence; course material, such as syllabi and lecture notes; administrative files; files relating to various professional activities; manuscripts; publications; material from a research project about Filipino identity; reference files; personal files including those related to his wife Jo Tilman; audiovisual material such as video cassettes, tape reels, slides and photographs; artifacts; and computer-related material.
Robert O. Tilman (1929-1987) was professor of political science, 1971-1987; dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 1971-1984; and founder of the North Carolina Japan Center at North Carolina State University. Tilman was an expert in Southeast Asian political systems.

Tilman was a member of the Association for Asian Studies, Southeast Asia Development Advisory Group, Asia Society, Southeastern Regional Conference on Asian Studies, XXVII International Congress of Orientalists, American Political Science Association, Southern Political Science Association, American Conference of Academic Deans, and the Board of Directors of the Triange University Center for Advanced Studies. His honors included membership in Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi, as well as selection as an American Society of International Law Fellow, 1963; American Council of Learned Societies Fellow, 1964; National Science Foundation Senior Fellow, 1969-1970; American Philosophical Society Fellow, 1974; and Fulbright Senior Research Fellow, 1982-1983.
Tilman received a B.S. from Memphis State University in 1957; M.A. from Duke University in 1959; and Ph.D. from Duke University in 1961. He was employed by the United State Army Security Agency from 1951 to 1954 and the National Security Agency from 1954 to 1957 before he began his teaching career. He was an assistant professor at Tulane University, 1962-1965; assistant and associate professor at Yale University, 1965-1970; senior research fellow at Columbia University, 1970-1971; and professor at North Carolina State University, 1971-1987.
Born in Caruthersville, Missouri, on 21 July 1929, Tilman married Jo Carolyn Huddleston on 19 December 1954. Tilman died on 23 August 1987.

This series contains correspondence arranged chronologically from 1963 to 1987. Several files are arranged topically rather than chronologically, reflecting original order. The letters deal with various aspects of Tilman’s career, including job proposals, publishing, research, meetings and conferences, and correspondence with colleagues.
This series includes syllabi, lecture notes, exams and quizzes, and reading material for political science classes taught at Yale University and North Carolina State University.

This series includes information about a cooperative program between North Carolina State University and the University of the Philippines, a scholarly communications computer program developed at North Carolina State University, and other miscellaneous materials. This series also contains files arranged alphabetically as Tilman had them.
This series contains material related to Tilman’s involvement with various professional committees, organizations, conferences, and associations. A substantial portion deals with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Also included are book and article reviews written by Tilman, a survey of Southeast Asian specialists, and information relating to Singaporean Prime Minister Kuan Yew Lee’s visit to Washington, D.C. and Raleigh, N.C. in 1985.
This series contains manuscripts, essays, and other writings by Tilman. Several drafts of an Association of Southeast Asian Nations manuscript titled Southeast Asia and the Enemy Beyond Its Shores and essays for a book project edited by Tilman titled Six Perspectives on Southeast Asia are included. This series also contains miscellaneous notes and note cards, some of which relate to the manuscripts.
This series contains materials from a research project conducted by Tilman in the Philippines in the late 1960s. The study addressed Chinese identity in Filipino youth. Included in this series are background reference materials relating to socialization and political identity; preliminary and final reports; instructions for scoring the questionnaires; and thirty-five respondent files from Filipino students.
This series contains miscellaneous material including article reprints, photocopied book excerpts, maps, and abstracts, and publications relating to Southeast Asia. Publications include reports, bulletins, newsletters, journals, and news clippings. Also included are foreign language materials and speeches by various Asian leaders.
This series contains miscellaneous non-professional material relating to Tilman and his wife Jo. Correspondence relating to the estate of Mrs. Tilman’s mother, greeting cards, and various other documents are included.
This series contains various video cassettes, audio reels, slides, and photographs relating both to Tilman’s professional career and personal life. Slides include images of various Southeast Asian countries. Many of the audio reels contain music, and several are unidentified.
This series contains several objects that belonged to Tilman including a small painted scroll, a silver medallion, a carved wooden box, and a leather portfolio.
This series contains a user’s guide for “The Research Assistant” computer program, several 5.5’’ floppy disks, a computer modem, and data processing magnetic tape.
