King Papers contain correspondence, political campaign materials, newsletters from a variety of local and national organizations, flyers, clippings, membership rosters, fundraising information, invitations, precinct maps, journal articles, newspaper editorials, and reports and resolutions on political issues. The majority of the material was generated through Cyrus King's work to promote civil rights and racial justice and his work on political campaigns. Correspondence includes letters to and from political figures. There are also documents that relate to his time as a librarian at North Carolina State University and a small amount of personal correspondence. Materials range in date from 1932 to 2014, with the majority dated after 1980. Cyrus Baldwin King (1922-2014), worked in the North Carolina State University Libraries for over twenty years and was active in a wide variety of efforts to promote civil rights and social justice. He was hired by N.C. State as an acquisitions librarian in 1963 and retired in 1984 as Assistant Director for Collection Management and Development. He was very politically active, writing tirelessly in support of the causes that he has adopted, most notably racial justice, campaigns to promote peace and non-violence, and other civil rights causes.

The first library at North Carolina State University was established in 1889 in a room in Holladay Hall. In 1925 a new purpose-built library building was constructed (now Brooks Hall). In 1954 the current D.H. Hill Library building was opened (originally just the east wing of the current structure). The library space was expanded in 1971 by building an 11-story book tower and connecting the original space with the former student union (now the Erdahl-Cloyd or west wing). Further expansion and renovation occurred in the 1980s, culminating in 1990 with the opening of the second (or "south") bookstack tower. In 2013 the award-winning James B. Hunt Library opened on the university’s Centennial Campus. In 2016, NC State University Libraries won the National Medal for Museum and Library Service, bestowed by the Institute for Museum and Library Service. The medal was presented by First Lady Michelle Obama to Director Susan Nutter during a ceremony. Susan Nutter retired from the Libraries in 2017, after an esteemed 30 year tenure.

In the early years of North Carolina State College, the circulation of books was managed by the university librarian and a group of student assistants. In the 1930s, librarian William Porter Kellam organized the library into five departments: reference, ordering, cataloging, periodicals, and circulation, which would later become Access and Delivery Services. Robert W. Severance was the first circulation librarian, followed by Harlan Brown. In the 2010s, the department's name was changed to Access Services with a mission to develop and implement services that connect users with experts, collections, technology, and spaces.

The North Carolina State University Libraries’ Associate Director for Public Services was primarily concerned with meeting the needs of the Libraries’ users including students, faculty, staff, and the outlying community. There was some overlap in terms of responsibilities and therefore records of the Public Services Council, Assistant Director for Reference Services, and the Assistant Director for General Services. Topics addressed by Public Services included photocopy services, interlibrary loan of materials, reference services, usability of library collection guides, and serials cataloging. The position later became the Donald E. Moreland Deputy Director of Libraries.

MoreThese records contain files pertaining to the activities and administration of the North Carolina State University Burlington Textiles Library including correspondence and reference files kept by the library, clippings, brochures, and other information about topics related to the College of Textiles. They also include slide sets, a portrait of Wallace W. Riddick, Jr., the Dedication Plaque for the Burlington Textiles Library, the Quick Response Collection, Textile World Charts, and panels from past exhibits. Materials range in date from 1911 to 2010. From 1988 to 2013, the Burlington Textiles Library was located in room 4411 of the College of Textiles complex on the Centennial Campus at North Carolina State University. The Library provided services to the faculty and staff, students, and NC State Centennial Campus community and university affiliates. The Library supported the curriculum and research programs in textile chemistry, textile materials and management, and fiber and polymer science. In 2013, the Burlington Textiles Library was subsumed by the new James B. Hunt, Jr. Library, also on Centennial Campus.

The records also include those of the Long Range Planning Committee, the Centennial Celebration Committee, and the Commission on the State of the Library. The majority of these records belonged to Jinnie Davis who retired in 2001 after twenty-one years of working for the Libraries. The North Carolina State University Libraries Administration carries out the library's mission by planning, organizing, directing, and promoting activities and operations in public service; by managing, organizing, and preserving collections; by recruiting, retaining, and developing personnel; by fundraising and reseraching; and through technology support, budget and finance, facilities, and public relations. The exhibit, entitled The Walk of the Immigrants, ran from January - April 2012 in the Exhibit Gallery of D.H. Hill Library. The Records also include materials related to the North Carolina Literary Festival, hosted by NC State in April of 2014. Materials date from 2010 to 2015. The Director of Program Planning and Outreach provides programming that builds connections and networks between the NC State University Libraries and the university community. The programming includes the Fabulous Faculty Series, the Student All-Star Series, the Amazing Alumni Series, and the North Carolina Literary Festival, among other endeavors.

MoreThe records of the North Carolina State University Library Committee span from 1934 to 1998 and include the records of the Library Building Committee, a subcommittee of the Library Committee formed to oversee the construction of additional library facilities in the 1960s. Included in the collection are the minutes of the committee, fund allocations, correspondence from various departments and information on library policy. Documents relating to construction in the 1960s span from 1965 to 1967 and include bound proposals for the construction and use of the facility. Documents are arranged chronologically, with building committee records following full committee records. The North Carolina State University (North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, 1887-1917; North Carolina State College, 1917-1965) Library Committee was first formed in 1908. English professors, Thomas P. Harrison and George Summey were appointed as co-chairs of the library committee. The role of the committee was to contact faculty for recommendations of titles to be added to the library collection. The role of the library committee has expanded since this time and, though it still advises on accessions, it also handles the finnancial responsibilities of the library, oftentimes advocating for more facility resources and making descisions on library policies. As of 2012, the University Library Committee (also referred to as the University Standing Committee on Library) advises the Provost and the Director of Libraries on the fomulation of library policy in relationship to development of resources, the allocation of book funds, the allocation of library space and the general development of library service to the University.

The majority of newspapers are local, including the News and Observer and the Raleigh Times, but national papers, such as the New York Times, are also included. Other clippings relate broadly to the Harrye B. Lyons Library, School of Design, and North Carolina State University including associated students and staff. Acquisition information, annual reports, project reports, policies, meetings notes, and reference files of the Harrye B. Lyons Library are included. Brochures, fliers, and memoranda relating to the students, staff, faculty, and events of the School of Design are also included. The Harrye B. Lyons Design Library supports the North Carolina State University, College of Design, orginally School of Design, and has collection emphases in architecture, landscape architecture, graphic design, industrial design, and art and design. The Design Library is located in Brooks Hall, now part of the College of Design. Brooks Hall was originally built to be the library on campus, D. H. Hill Jr. Library. The Design Library inhabits the space that was the original reading room of D. H. Hill Jr. Library. It was named for Mrs. Harrye B. Lyons, who headed the Design Library from 1947 to 1968.

MoreThe records of the North Carolina State University Libraries' involvement in the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN) include committee/subcommittee information and meeting minutes, correspondence, memoranda, manuals and information on training procedures, newsletters, and other general information about the committees, subcommittees, activities, and services of TRLN. Materials range in date from 1974 to 1997. The consortium known today as the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN) started with a collaboration betwen Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the 1930s to share the development of their respective collections. North Carolina State College (now North Carolina State University) began participating in these cooperative collection development programs in the 1950s. In 1977, this group became known as the Triangle University Library Cooperative Committee (TULCC), and adopted the curent name of TRLN in the fall of 1980. North Carolina Central University joined the consortia in 1995, with the current mission of the TRLN continuing to be the joint development of collections and resources as shared between the four member libraries. Representatives from the North Carolina State University libraries (as well as from the three other member libraries) participate in various committees, subcommittees, task forces, and project groups for the joint TRLN efforts. The stated mission of the consortium is to marshal the financial, human, and information resources of their research libraries through cooperative efforts in order to create a rich and unparalleled knowledge environment that furthers the universities’ teaching, research, learning, and service missions (https://trln.org/, accessed 08/14/2020).
