Contained in this collection are an NC State decal and football ticket from Charles "Les" Britt's years as a student at North Carolina State College (1950). Also included is a 2017 memoir Britt wrote for his children. In it he recounts his life and career, including his student years at NC State College (later NC State University) and his membership in Kappa Sigma fraternity. Charles Leslie "Les" Britt, Jr. (1930-2017), had a long career in aviation and aeronautical electronics. Working for General Electric, he oversaw the payload of the first successful Atlas missile launch at Cape Canaveral. In 1962, he joined Research Triangle Institute (RTI), where he researched and designed radar techniques, electronic systems, and large computer applications. In 1979, he founded the RTI Virginia Office, and worked with NASA, the FAA, and manufacturers to develop, test, and certify the lifesaving airborne wind shear radar detection system that became required for all U.S. commercial aircraft. This collection contains two report cards for Frank Newton Phillips, Jr., for the academic year 1936-1937. Frank Newton Phillips, Jr., was an civil engineering student at North Carolina State College. He graduated with a bachelor of science degree in 1937. He remained in North Carolina, and during his career he worked on projects for Piedmont Natural Gas, Colonial Pipeline, and the Greensboro airport. He died in 2010 at age 94. Less

The John D. Mattox Papers contain photographic prints, negatives, and contact sheets, and papers depicting the personal and professional life of John D. Mattox. Personal portraits and snapshots document the lives of Mattox, his wife Mary, their son Douglas, and their extended family. Also included are photographs of the town of Wendell, North Carolina, where the Mattox family lived. The collection also includes photographs taken while Mattox served in Europe during World War II. Relating to Mattox’s professional career as a photographer at North Carolina State University, there are many images of campus scenes, student and faculty portraits, and campus publications featuring Mattox’s work. Wedding photographs, miscellaneous portraits, unidentified original and copied tintypes and cartes de visite, as well as rolled 35 mm negatives are also included. While the majority of the collection is composed of photographs, there are some papers such as news clippings, correspondence, business cards, awards, brochures, and grade reports which belonged to Mattox. John Douglas Mattox, Sr. (1911-1987) was a photographer with the Visual Aids Department at North Carolina State University from 1949 to 1974. A native of Wendell, North Carolina, Mattox attended North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in the 1930s and enlisted in the Army in 1941, serving in Europe. He married the former Mary Elizabeth Davis of Columbia, South Carolina, and had a son John Douglas Mattox, Jr., called Doug. Contained here is the single-fold program for the ROTC military ball held at NC State College on 3 April 1954. The North Carolina State University’s Reserve Officer’s Training Corp (ROTC) is a group of four campus programs, the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps, which trains officers of the United State armed forces in basic military and officer training. Contained here is a black-and-white 8 x 10 inch photograph of the parking lot south of Tucker and Owen Residence Halls (dormitories) on the North Carolina State College (now University) campus. The photographer is unknown. The depicted parking lot later became Cates Ave. The photo shows the view to the west, and in the distance are some of the Vetville married housing unit. North Carolina State University was established in 1887 as the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (A&M College), and the College opened in 1889. In 1917, the institution's name was changed to North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (State College). In 1931, it became a part of the Consolidated University of North Carolina. In 1965 the name changed to North Carolina State University, and since 1972 it has been one of the constituent institutions of the multi-campus University of North Carolina system. Less
