AI for Course Instructors

If you are a course instructor, the Libraries can support you in incorporating critical AI literacy and AI skill development into courses you are teaching. In addition to our longstanding Library Instruction Programs that help students develop research, technology, and information literacy skills, we specifically approach AI learning in these ways:

• We offer a variety of workshops: 
  • Build Your First Public Portfolio with GitHub: AI, Version Control, and IDE Basics
  • AI Tools for Research (on demand)
  • Critical Play with Generative AI, which opens conversations on AI’s societal impact (offered as an instruction session for a course)
• Subject specialist librarians can meet with faculty to discuss the use of AI for research projects in their courses
• We provide bespoke course support for learning AI and other interactive technologies with a learning-by-doing emphasis

Additionally, librarians in our Open Knowledge Center are contributing to the development of a UNC System Foundational AI Skills Course, and are also at work on a values-driven framework for evaluating AI tools.

Our work in AI instruction has been informed by the Digital Education Council AI Literacy Framework.

Other campus resources

DELTA is a great campus resource for faculty who are interested in planning their instruction with AI in mind. 

• DELTA facilitates the AI Teaching and Learning Community, a group of faculty and staff who discuss AI in the classroom, and have created an AI Teaching Ideas Collection.
• They also provide guidance for course AI policies, designing assignments with generative AI in mind, and more.

The Data Science and AI Academy also organizes two teams of faculty on campus who are available to help and talk about AI topics within their disciplines/areas of focus:

• AI Fellows: A cross-college faculty cohort advancing collaboration, leadership and research in artificial intelligence
• AI Liaisons: Connect colleagues across colleges and units to share knowledge, resources and best practices for AI
