Citing AI Usage

It’s good scholarly practice to cite where you get your information from, and to be transparent about the tools you use in your research and scholarship. AI is no exception. 

Common methods of citing AI usage

Check with your professor, PI, or colleagues to determine which is most appropriate for your specific context.

• Draft an AI disclosure statement, describing how AI was used in your work
  • Tools like the AI Attribution Toolkit and the AI Disclosure Drafter can help with this
• Cite the tool just as you would any other academic source, using whichever citation style you’re using for the rest of your project
  • Examples: cite generative AI in APA and MLA styles

Policies for publication

If you’re planning to publish your work, many journals and publishers now have their own AI use policies that you must adhere to, in order to be eligible to publish with them. Here are some examples:
