Future Wearables

Wearables are the future of connected devices. As technologies have become smaller and more powerful they have also become easier to integrate into our everyday interactions with the world. Medical implants, smart watches, smart clothing, and many other tools are changing what we do, how we do, and how we work together.  In this workshop Sibel Deren Guler , founder of Teknikio, will help us explore wearable devices and consider how new technologies might change, improve, or augment our lives?

Using electronics and craft materials we’ll work together to prototype future wearable devices.  Drawing inspiration from superheroes, science fiction, and own imaginations, we’ll investigate new ways to interact with technologies, we’ll experiment with new methods of sensing and making sense, and we’ll imagine new futures to explore.

Sibel Deren Guler is a designer, scientist, and educator based in New York. She researches and develops technology that uses interactivity and computation to explore nature and create playful experiences. Designing accessible tools to improve the quality of life is her key motivator in her work. She has lead award-winning design and engineering projects around the world centered on this theme. She created Teknikio- a series of toolkits that enable you to embed electronics into anything-  in attempt to fill the gap of hands-on science and engineering products for children, especially for young girls. She is currently working on Wearable Recipes, a book about the state of wearables to be published in 2016, along with a never ending list of personal side projects. In addition to Teknikio, she adjuncts at Parsons the New School for Design, and is a co-founder of the FatCatFabLab.
