About This Workshop

This workshop will teach some fundamental geospatial data concepts, software options, and basic steps to transform location coordinates into a dataset and map that can be used to visualize and analyze spatial patterns.  We will process the point locations to compute where they are the most dense and locate statistically significant clusters.  The steps to share the map through a web app and/or operational dashboard will also be covered.

Workshop participants will need to have a free ArcGIS Online account from https://ncsu.maps.arcgis.com/.  Learn more about ArcGIS Online accounts at https://www.lib.ncsu.edu/gis/arcgisonline.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand different data formats used for GIS data

  • Learn how to convert a spreadsheet of location descriptions (coordinates, addresses, etc.) to feature data for mapping

  • Experience navigating for data and tools within ArcGIS Online

  • Use analytical tools to calculate and visualize patterns

  • Prepare a web map and/or an operational dashboard, and share access permissions for others to find and view your results
