Contest Rules and Regulations

The 3rd Annual Multimedia Research Contest is a contest designed to give NC State students an opportunity to use digital multimedia to create new knowledge and present it in engaging ways. This year’s theme is The Sustainability Balancing Act: Society, Economy, and Environment. More information.

Rules

1. The contest is open to all undergraduate and master's students enrolled at the North Carolina State University during the Fall 2016 and/or Spring 2017 semesters.
2. Submissions may be submitted by either an individual or a group consisting of at least 2 people. Groups may contain both undergraduates and master's students.
3. Submissions must be received by February 1, 2017 at 11:59PM.
4. Total prizes will total $1500, distributed at the discretion of the judges. The cash prizes, generously donated by Gale Cengage Learning, may be won by either individuals or groups. Honorable mentions may also be awarded.
   1. To receive an awarded prize, winners must submit a W-9 form to contest organizers by May 1, 2017. Failure to do so may result in forfeiture of the prize.
5. The winners of the contest will be announced at an awards banquet; to receive the prize the winner must be present at the ceremony (time TBD in consultation with contest winners). In the case of a group project, at least one member of the group must be present at the ceremony.
6. Winners are responsible for any tax implications. There is a greater impact on nonresident aliens who are subject to US tax of 30% for prizes and awards. There are also several pieces of legal documentation required in order to process the payment for nonresident aliens (W-8BEN, visa, passport, I-94).
7. Contestants will retain full ownership of any and all intellectual property, but we ask that you grant the University and Gale nonexclusive rights to display their works for non-commercial research, scholarly, promotional, or educational purposes, under the terms of a Creative Commons CC-BY-NC license.
8. Contestants must agree to abide by all Rules, Requirements, and Criteria for the content, and warrant that all work submitted is their own and not in violation of state or federal laws or of any NCSU policies.

Requirements for Submissions

1. All submissions must include:
   • a 200-300 word overview describing the research process behind the project
   • a 50-100 word abstract
   • a bibliography of sources
2. All submissions must include visual component(s), but they may also include audio.
3. All submissions must be related to sustainability.
4. All submissions must contain one or more of the following as context: historical, social, or cultural context.
5. All submissions must be in a digital format, which may include: film, web site, animation, online exhibit, presentation, 3-D visualization, or video game.
6. All submissions must be openly accessible online or in one of the following file formats: .docx, .pdf, .jpg, .png, .stl, .tif, .xlsx, .pptx, .mov, .mp4 (h.264 codec)
   • Any alternative format must be approved by January 11, 2017 by organizers at multimediacontest@ncsu.edu

Criteria for Judging Entries

• Originality of research.
• Appropriate use of digital formats.
• Creative presentation.

Judges may consult with outside specialists if their expertise is necessary to fully judge a project.
