Use This "Cool App" to Put the Library on your Cell Phone!

In a recent post on the influential information technology blog, the O'Reilly Radar, Peter Brantley, who is the Executive Director for the Digital Library Federation, called the NCSU Libraries' MobiLIB service a "cool app".

He described it as "one of the first and most straightforward mobile library catalog interfaces" and said that "it points to a new and very welcome generation of services that will better direct the rich resources of our libraries into the hands of users, wherever they are."

Unveiled this summer, MobiLIB is a suite of library services specifically designed for Web-enabled, small-screen mobile devices such as cell phones and PDAs.

MobiLIB currently consists of seven services. ?Catalog Search? offers a simplified search interface for the library catalog that allows users to limit their searches to available items. ?Computers? shows the location and count of available computers in the D. H. Hill Jr. Library, while ?Library Hours? lists operating hours for all NCSU libraries and core services. Users can search the ?Campus Directory? to find contact information for NCSU staff and students, and ?Contact Us? allows them to access various library departments and services. ?Links? contains a selection of links to external content providers, such as mobile search engines, and ?Wolfline Status? links to a text-only version of the Wolfline map that shows the current position of all Wolfline buses. New services are planned for the future.
