The Chester J. Dr. Milton M. Leonard opened his practice in Asheville, North Carolina, in 1914, soon after receiving his doctorate in veterinary medicine from Cornell Veterinary College (now known as College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University).  Throughout his career in North Carolina Leonard was active in veterinary circles, becoming the president of the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (NCVMA) in 1917.  Additionally, he served in every officer position during his time with the NCVMA.  In 1957, the association named Dr. Leonard Veterinarian of the Year.  He was also a member of the American and Southern States Veterinary Medical Associations, American Animal Hospital Association, and the Piedmont and North Carolina State Veterinarian Associations.  Leonard was a strong proponent of the state of North Carolina having its own veterinary school.
