The Chaplains' Cooperative Ministry Records, 1956-2016, document the organization's decades on North Carolina State University's campus. A significant portion of the papers are meeting minutes, but brochures, correspondence, administrative files, documentation from events, photographs, and news clippings are also included. All materials are organized alphabetically and retain the group's original filing system.
North Carolina State University's Chaplains' Cooperative Ministry traces its origins to the 1950s when the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) was based in the King Religious Center (where Kamphoefner Hall now stands). At this time, there was a group of twelve denominational chaplains known as the Campus Ministry, granted all the rights and privileges of faculty and staff. In the 1960s, the Campus Minsitry gained some autonomy from the YMCA when the position of Coordinator of Religious Affairs was established under the Division of Student Affairs. This first coordinator, Oscar Wooldridge, adopted many of the activities that would become the Chaplains' Cooperative Ministry, including acting as a liaison for the campus chaplains, organizing a faculty retreat, and providing grief counseling.
Over decades, the organization changed names from Campus Ministry to Cooperative Campus Ministries, to the Chaplains' Cooperative Ministry. Throughout the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, the organization sponsored events such as the weekly forum, a beach retreat for members, a faculty retreat, and weekly breakfasts. It established a meeting place called The Nub and made plans for a Spiritual Life Center, though never realized. The chaplains represented different denominations such as the Baptist Campus Ministry, the Catholic Campus Ministry, Hillel, Lutheran Campus Ministry, and the Wesley Foundation (United Methodist). An Interfaith Coalition representing Buddhism, Latter-Day Saints, and Islam was also created. The mission was to support individual faith through dialogue and inquiry, while respecting the religious convictions of others.
