Dr. Andries van Foreest was the founding member of the European Veterinary Dental Society (EVDS) in 1992 in Rome. He was also a Charter Full Member of the Society for Marine Mammalogy. Van Foreest was president of the European Association for Aquatic Mammals from 1982 to 1983. He died in February 2015. Michael K. Stoskopf, collector of these materials, is, as of 2020, directing the Environmental Medicine Consortium at N.C. State University and participates actively in the inter-college Fisheries and Wildlife and Marine Sciences programs. He is professor of wildlife and aquatic health in the College of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Clinical Sciences, with appointments in Forestry, Biomedical Engineering, and Toxicology. Dr. David A. Jessup is a wildlife veterinarian who earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology at the University of Washington in 1971. After receiving his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Washington State University veterinary school in 1976 and spending ten months in a pathology residency at the University of California-Davis, he was hired by the California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) as its first wildlife veterinarian. He served CDFG in various capacities for more than 33 years, the last 15 in Santa Cruz, California, as Senior Wildlife Veterinarian and Supervisor of the Marine Wildlife Veterinary Care and Research Center. During his career he took time out to earn a Master's degree in Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at U.C. Davis and get Board certified in Zoological Medicine. He retired from CDFG in November 2010 and was hired as the Executive Manager of the Wildlife Disease Association (WDA), an international non-profit scientific organization. The David A. This collection is an oral history conducted by Kristina Baltutis of Dr. Lee Simmons at the Omaha Zoo. Dr. Lee G. Simmons received his DVM from Oklahoma State University in 1963. His first position at a zoo was curator of mammals at the Columbus Ohio Zoo in 1963. He later became staff veterinarian and assistant director. His next appointment, in 1966, was as the veterinarian at the Omaha Zoo. Dr. Simmons later became assistant director and then, in 1970, the zoo director. After his retirement as director he served as the chairman of the board for the Omaha Zoo Foundation. Dr. Lee Simmons is Director Emeritus of the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium in Omaha, Nebraska. The Gregory A. Lewbart Papers is comprised of files representing Dr. Gregory Lewbart’s veterinary work, research, teaching, and professional development activities. The collection includes clinical documents, research materials, correspondence, news clippings, documentation from publishing processes, administrative documents, photographs, and teaching files. Most of the files are from his work at North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and his work in the larger veterinary community. Additionally, some files pertain to his education and prior work experience. Gregory Aldo Lewbart (b. March 2, 1959) is a veterinarian of aquatic animals and terrestrial invertebrates and reptiles. Dr. Lewbart received a B.A. in biology from Gettysburg College in 1981, an M.S. in biology with a concentration in marine biology from Northeastern University in 1985, and a VMD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1988. In 1993, he joined the faculty of North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) as Professor of Aquatic Animal Medicine. The James F. Wright Papers contains membership lists, meeting minutes, and correspondence of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians (AAZV), as well as case reports presented to the Association. Other materials include professional correspondence, reports, notes, articles, and five 16 mm films relating to early use of dart guns and tranquilizing agents. The collection also contains professional certificates, yearbooks from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, and pages from a scrapbook. Most materials date from the late 1950s to early 1970s, with a few earlier and later items. James F. Wright was an honorary diplomate of the American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM) and a researcher in the field of zoological health. He served on the faculty of N.C. State University from 1984 to 2004, and he was a pathologist and consulting clinical veterinarian at the North Carolina Zoological Park. He was the first clinical veterinarian at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., and helped establish a national zoo in Senegal, Africa. He is notable for his contribution to refining early dart guns and tranquilizing agents. In addition to the American College of Zoological Medicine, he was a member of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians, Wildlife Disease Association, American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, Society of Toxicologic Pathologists, American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums, and the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association. The Laurel A. Degernes Papers, 1970-2016, contain a wide variety of materials, including correspondence, photographs, conference materials, patient charts, radiographs, manuscripts, course materials, conference handbooks, presentation notes, newspaper clippings, magazines, CDs, DVDs and VHS tapes. The collection provides information about Degernes’ work as a staff veterinarian at the Raptor Center at University of Minnesota, St. Paul, her involvement in the Trumpeter Swan reintroduction program, and her work as a professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University. The collection also includes materials relating to Degernes' participation in various professional organizations and conferences, her contributions to avian medicine and surgery scholarship, and her work as a consultant in parrot, raptor, and waterfowl medicine. Dr. Laurel “Laurie” Ann Degernes was a professor of avian medicine at North Carolina State University from 1992 to 2016. She holds a B.A. in Biology (1976), a B.S. in Veterinary Sciences (1979), and D.V.M. (1981) from the University of Minnesota, St. Paul. In 1992, Degernes interned at The Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota, St. Paul, and eventually served as a staff veterinarian there from 1986 to 1990. During this time, Degernes gained national attention for her work treating and rehabilitating lead-poisoned trumpeter swans through the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ Trumpeter Swan reintroduction program. Degernes later moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, to complete her residency training in exotic and wild bird medicine at the College of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University. After her residency, she became a faculty member at NC State. During a sabbatical leave in 2005, Degernes earned a M.P.H. in Epidemiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Michael K. Stoskopf Papers, 1934-2020, primarily contain files related to Stoskopf's research and teaching and his involvement in professional organizations, particularly the American College of Zoological Medicine and North Carolina State University Center For Marine Sciences and Technology. There are also blueprints from his work with the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland. Digital photographs as well as publications related to veterinary and zoological medicine, aquaculture, wildlife and the enrivonment are also included. While the materials span the time period 1934-2020, most documents date from the 1980s and the 1990s. Michael K. Stoskopf has worked at North Carolina State University since 1989. As of 2020, he directs the Environmental Medicine Consortium at N.C. State and participates actively in the inter-college Fisheries and Wildlife and Marine Sciences programs. The Mitchell Bush Papers contain research and teaching notes, presentations and materials, journals and publications, correspondence, field studies, field notes, research projects, training materials, anesthesia records, digital media such as floppy disks, CD-ROMS, zip disks, film strips, videotapes and 35mm slides documenting medical studies, surgeries and wildlife in national and international settings. Many of the files relate to Mitchell Bush's work with the National Zoological Park through the Smithsonian Institution. There are also separate series about his work with giraffes and his work with pandas. Almost the entire collection is related to Bush's work as a zoo veterinarian. Although the collection has been divided into series to assist with the research process, some topics may be covered across multiple series. For example, there is a series about the work that Bush did with pandas, but pandas may also appear in other series such as in the Subject Files or the Professional Organizations series. The majority of the materials in the collections date from 1950 to 2012. A few earlier items or reprints of earlier items are also included. Mitchell (Mitch) Bush is a leader in the field of modern zoological medicine. He graduated from the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California, Davis, in 1965, and his career has been focused on pioneering studies and clinical practice in zoological and comparative medicine. He has worked for the National Zoological Park at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., since 1972, and beginning in 1994 he has served as the Chief of Veterinary Services at the Smithsonian Conservation & Research Center. He holds a position as an assistant professor in the Department of Comparative Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Medical School and is a visiting scientist at Kruger National Park in South Africa. Less

The Piedmont Wildlife Center Records include medical records, 2003-2009, of Piedmont Wildlife Center, including intake forms and logs, physical exam forms, lab logs, and a record of data from the North Carolina Bioterrorism and Emerging Infection Prevention System (BEIPS). Records include information on species of animal admitted, its injury, found orphaned or ill, location where found, person bringing animal to the hospital and subsequent information about examination findings, treatment, or disposition (released, died in care, euthanized, other). The Piedmont Wildlife Center is a non-profit organization founded in 2003 located in Durham, North Carolina. Their mission is to foster a healthy relationship among people, wildlife, and nature. They focus on education, conservation, and promoting the care of injured and sick native wildlife. While not all animals are on display, they do house some animals for educational purposes including birds, reptiles, and amphibians. Less

The Suzanne Kennedy-Stoskopf Papers contain materials relating to Suzanne Kennedy-Stoskopf’s research, professional, and teaching interests. Included are research studies, grants, animal patient records, lab tests, organizational materials, veterinary medicine course materials, publications, born-digital content, and some personal papers. A significant portion of the collection documents Dr. Kennedy-Stoskopf’s research and clinical work in the field of zoological health, environmental medicine, and veterinary medicine. Other materials document Dr. Kennedy-Stoskopf’s professional activities in organizations such as the American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM), the American Veterinary Medicine Association (AVMA), the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians (AAZV), and the International Association of Aquatic Animal Medicine (IAAAM), among others. The remainder of the collection contains papers highlighting her role as faculty member for the NC State University, College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), Department of Microbiology, Pathology, and Parasitology. The collection ranges in date from 1968 to 2017. Suzanne Kennedy-Stoskopf is well-known for her role as the first female veterinarian at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park and the first full time female faculty member specializing in zoological medicine in North America. In 1990, Dr. Kennedy-Stoskopf joined the NC State University CVM faculty in the Department of Microbiology, Pathology, and Parasitology. During her tenure at the CVM, she co-founded and directed the country’s first three-year residency in zoological medicine. As of 2016, she is a research professor with NC State University's Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology program, an intercollegiate degree program administered by the CVM, the College of Natural Resources and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. During this time, she has also conducted extensive clinical and research studies with an emphasis on infectious diseases, immunology, and environmental medicine, specifically relating to aquatic animal, feline, amphibian, and avian populations. Dr. Kennedy-Stoskopf has quite an extensive role in several veterinary medicine organizations across the country, including the American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM) and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). The William Lance Collection of M-series Drug Records contains reports, correspondence with the Federal Drug Administration, agreements, New Animal Drug Applications, and films relating to the development and testing of the M-99 drug and its antidotes, M50-50 and M-285. Records range in date from 1964 to 1971. The M-series were revolutionary drugs in zoological health. The drugs are an analgesic which can cause catatonia at very low doseages; they are used for immobilising game animals. The M-series of drugs is composed of M-99, or etorphine, as well as M-99's antidotes, M50-50 and M-285. The drugs were developed in partnership between American Cyanamid Company of Pearl River, New York and Reckitt & Sons, Ltd. of Hull, England. Reckitt & Sons Ltd. conducted many laboratory tests of the drugs which helped to inform American Cyanamid Company's application to the New Animal Drug department of the FDA. Lederle Laboratories located in Pearl River, New York manufactured the drugs for export. William Lance's company, Wildlife Pharmaceuticals, acquired the records and the rights to the M-series drugs after its formation in 1981. Less
