The Suzanne Kennedy-Stoskopf Papers, 1979-2012, contain materials compiled for American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM) board preparation courses, 1997-2012; reports and other materials relating to meetings of the American Board for Veterinary Specialties (ABVS); reports and other papers of the Morris Animal Foundation; and other material documenting Suzanne Kennedy-Stoskopf's professional activities.

Suzanne Kennedy-Stoskopf is Research Professor of Aquatics, Wildlife and Zoo Medicine at the College of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University (as of 2016). She was the first female veterinarian at the Smithsonian National Zoo and the first fulltime, female faculty member specializing in zoological medicine in North America. Her research interests include zoological medicine, the impacts of environmental factors on immune function and disease expression in wildlife populations, and the health management of wild felids.

Biographical/historical note

Suzanne Kennedy-Stoskopf is Research Professor of Aquatics, Wildlife and Zoo Medicine at the College of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University (as of 2016). She was the first female veterinarian at the Smithsonian National Zoo and the first fulltime, female faculty member specializing in zoological medicine in North America. Her research interests include zoological medicine, the impacts of environmental factors on immune function and disease expression in wildlife populations, and the health management of wild felids.

Suzanne Kennedy-Stoskopf earned her DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) from Michigan State University and her Ph.D. in immunology and infectious diseases from Johns Hopkins University. In addition to her work at the National Zoo, Kennedy-Stoskopf organized the zoological medicine program at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine. She also held faculty appointments in the School of Medicine at Johns Hopkins and the Basel Institute for Immunology.

In 1989, Kennedy-Stoskopf joined the faculty of the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at North Carolina State University (NCSU). There, she co-founded and directed the country's first three-year residency in zoological medicine, which serves as a national model. She continues to develop the CVM environmental and zoological medicine programs, and mentors students entering the profession.

Kennedy-Stoskopf has published widely in academic publications, including the Journal of Wildlife Diseases, the Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine, and Veterinary Immunology and Immunopathology. She is a Diplomate of the American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM) and was named Outstanding Woman Veterinarian of the Year in 2006 by the Association for Women Veterinarians.

The Suzanne Kennedy-Stoskopf Papers, 1979-2012, contain materials compiled for American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM) board preparation courses, 1997-2012; reports and other materials relating to meetings of the American Board for Veterinary Specialties (ABVS); reports and other papers of the Morris Animal Foundation; and other material documenting Suzanne Kennedy-Stoskopf's active role in many professional veterinary associations.

The American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM) Papers, 1992-2012, consist mostly of materials removed from binders that were prepared for board preparation courses for which Kennedy-Stoskopf was an instructor or coordinator. Also included are policies and procedures, 2001, of the ACZM; a 5-year in-depth report from the ACZM to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), 2002; and materials from a strategic planning retreat of the ACZM, 2005.
