The Dietrich von Haugwitz Papers, 1971-2007, contains various materials related to animal rights issues. Included are publications and other papers relating to animal rights organizations. Organizations include People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, The Humane Society of the United States, Animal Protection Society, and North Carolina Network for Animals. The organizations are both local to North Carolina and national. Topical Files contain general information about animal rights, animals used in biomedical research, hunting, vegetarianism, and individual species of animals. Several of the newsletters and news clippings contain materials written by Dietrich and Eva von Haugwitz. A few of the news articles relate to research studies at North Carolina State University which used animals. North Carolina State University philosphy professer Tom Regan, an opponent of animal studies, also appears in several articles. Dietrich von Haugwitz (1927-2007) was a German-born animal rights activist, who lived in Durham, North Carolina. Haugwitz became involved in animal rights in the 1980s, and founded a local chapter of the North Carolina Network for Animals. His wife Eva was also involved in animal rights activism, and served as president of the local Animal Protection Society. Haugwitz worked as a computer programmer/systems analyst at Duke University Medical Center before retiring in 1992. Less

The Ellis B. Cowling Papers contain files from 1957 to 2013 that include reports, notes, writings, research data, memos, correspondence, and newspaper clippings documenting Ellis B. Cowling's career. There are correspondence, publications, media clippings from newspapers, websites and magazines, drafts and reports from the Ad Hoc Committee at North Carolina State University and photographs all related to the move of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in 1999. There are also articles, correspondence, grant application materials, presentation materials, newsletters, newspaper clippings, and reports related to Cowling's animal waste research work, pertaining in particular to the Out-of-the-Box Thinking group. Additionally there are articles, background information, brochures, correspondence and news articles related to Cowling's involvement with the installation of Marye Anne Fox as Chancellor of North Carolina State University, the Watauga Seminar and the Faculty Senate. The largest series on the Southern Oxidants Study (SOS) contains annual meetings agendas, correspondence, presentation materials and reports related both directly to SOS and to its collaboration with other organizations. There is also extensive material about the Data Analysis Workshop conducted by SOS. In addition to these paper materials, there are also floppy disks, slides and photographs related to the Southern Oxidants Study (SOS). Finally, there are also audiovisual materials, primarily videotapes and cassette tapes. Most of the cassette tapes contain lectures Cowling gave over the course of a semester to the graduate-level PP [Plant Pathology] 650 course, although it is unclear what the course would have been titled since it no longer exists. Dr. Ellis B. Cowling is a University Distinguished Professor At-Large Emeritus of Forestry and Plant Pathology at North Carolina State University. Dr. Cowling specializes in biochemistry of wood decay, conservation of essential elements by forest trees, diseases of forest trees and deterioration of timber products, role of nitrogen in coevolution of forest trees and wood-destroying fungi, and integrated management of plant diseases. His other research interests include man-induced changes in the chemical climate and their effects on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and the role of scientists in public decision making. Dr. Cowling helped develop a nationwide system for monitoring acid deposition called the National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP). His appointment as the Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee of Faculty at North Carolina State University contributed to the preservation and relocation of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in North Carolina. Ernest L. Gooden (1903-1970) was born in Elizabethtown, North Carolina. Gooden graduated from Duke University, and taught at Glen Alpine High School in Glen Alpine, North Carolina, from 1927 to 1930. He joined the U.S. Department of Agriculture as an assistant scientific aide in September of 1930. Gooden had a 40-year career as a physicist with the USDA and specialized in pesticides. The Ernest L. Gooden Papers consists of materials documenting Gooden's career with the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service. Drafts and manuscripts of articles by Gooden include "Report of Physical Properties of Pesticides" and "Optical Crystallographic Properties of DDT." Research files contain notes, graphs, charts, and articles with labels like "Viscosity," "Zinc Arsenate," "Sodium Arsenite," and "Rotenone." This collection also contains electron microscope micrographs, patents and patent applications by Gooden, and hundreds of 3 x 5" x-ray diffraction data cards published by the Joint Committee on Chemical Analysis by X-Ray Diffraction Methods. These x-ray diffraction cards contain notes, calculations, and authors and their publications. Also included in this collection are glass slides, photos and negatives of electron microscope images, approximately a thousand 3 x 4" cards of chemical compounds and other notes, and materials from the annual meetings of the Electron Microscopy Society of America from 1949 to 1966. The John D. Mattox Papers contain photographic prints, negatives, and contact sheets, and papers depicting the personal and professional life of John D. Mattox. Personal portraits and snapshots document the lives of Mattox, his wife Mary, their son Douglas, and their extended family. Also included are photographs of the town of Wendell, North Carolina, where the Mattox family lived. The collection also includes photographs taken while Mattox served in Europe during World War II. Relating to Mattox’s professional career as a photographer at North Carolina State University, there are many images of campus scenes, student and faculty portraits, and campus publications featuring Mattox’s work. Wedding photographs, miscellaneous portraits, unidentified original and copied tintypes and cartes de visite, as well as rolled 35 mm negatives are also included. While the majority of the collection is composed of photographs, there are some papers such as news clippings, correspondence, business cards, awards, brochures, and grade reports which belonged to Mattox. John Douglas Mattox, Sr. (1911-1987) was a photographer with the Visual Aids Department at North Carolina State University from 1949 to 1974. A native of Wendell, North Carolina, Mattox attended North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in the 1930s and enlisted in the Army in 1941, serving in Europe. He married the former Mary Elizabeth Davis of Columbia, South Carolina, and had a son John Douglas Mattox, Jr., called Doug. This collection includes scrapbooks, meeting minutes, correspondence, and binders of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Administrative Professionals Association (formerly the North Carolina Extension Service Secretaries' Association.) Organized in 1973, the Association's purpose is to establish and maintain a structure through which members may be united in a professional development and improvement effort for the benefit of themselves and the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service. In 1979, the Association changed its name to the North Carolina Association of Agricultural Extension Secretaries. Files in this subgroup contain information about funded grant projects that units within the university received for the purpose of conducting research. Materials range in date from 1966 to 1997. This collection is made up of two series. The first contains pamphlets about maize research from 1934 to 1981, including corn performance test results and hybrid corn yield trials. The pamphlets included are semi-monthly farm reports, weekly weather and crop reports, field crops variety trials, and corn performance studies. There are several issues from three journals - North Carolina Agricultural Statistics, Mississippi Farm Research, and Agricultural Research. Also included is Harvey's dissertation on Hereditary Variation in Plant Nutrition from July 1939. The second series ranges in date from 1945 to 1980. It contains correspondence and reports written by Paul Harvey as well as newsletters and clippings documenting the activities of the Crop Science department. Paul H. Harvey taught at N.C. State for more than fifty years. He was appointed a William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor and became the founding head of the Department of Crop Science in the College of Agriculture and Life Science. In 1943 Dr. Harvey introduced "NC 1032," a higher-yielding hybrid corn for North Carolina soils. The new variety was the first of 12 new hybrids Harvey introduced during his career. Less
