This collection is made up of two series. The first contains pamphlets about maize research from 1934 to 1981, including corn performance test results and hybrid corn yield trials. The pamphlets included are semi-monthly farm reports, weekly weather and crop reports, field crops variety trials, and corn performance studies. There are several issues from three journals - North Carolina Agricultural Statistics, Mississippi Farm Research, and Agricultural Research. Also included is Harvey's dissertation on Hereditary Variation in Plant Nutrition from July 1939. The second series ranges in date from 1945 to 1980. It contains correspondence and reports written by Paul Harvey as well as newsletters and clippings documenting the activities of the Crop Science department.

Paul H. Harvey taught at N.C. State for more than fifty years. He was appointed a William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor and became the founding head of the Department of Crop Science in the College of Agriculture and Life Science. In 1943 Dr. Harvey introduced "NC 1032," a higher-yielding hybrid corn for North Carolina soils. The new variety was the first of 12 new hybrids Harvey introduced during his career.

Language

Most of the material is in English. A small amount of the material in the second series is in Spanish.

Biographical/historical note

Paul Henry Harvey (August 2, 1911-April 12, 2002) taught at N.C. State for more than fifty years. In 1956 was appointed a William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor, the highest honor for a faculty member in the College of Agriculture and Life Science. He was the founding head of the Department of Crop Science and led the department from 1956 to 1974. Following his tenure as department head, he was appointed Professor Emeritus and served in this position until 1982. During his time at N.C. State, Dr. Harvey also helped to organize Farm House Social Fraternity and Gamma Sigma Delta.

Paul Harvey was born in St. Paul, Nebraska. He received his Bachelor's degree in Agriculture in 1934 from the University of Nebraska and his Ph.D in Agronomy in 1938 from Iowa State University. Harvey was a crop scientist and pioneer in the field of corn breeding, with a special focus on corn hybrids. In 1943, he introduced "NC 1032," a higher-yielding hybrid corn for North Carolina soils. The new variety was the first of 12 new hybrids Harvey introduced during his career.

In 1999 Harvey established the Paul Henry Harvey Scholarship, a merit-based award for undergraduate crop science students. His contributions to N.C. State also include the Paul H. and Ethel M. Harvey Library Endowment, created to honor the memory of his first wife, Ethel.
