The Monticello Architectural Records contain architectural and archaeological data pertaining to the restoration and preservation of Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's home located in Charlottesville, Virginia. Included are copies of publications; microfilm of field notes and drawings of Milton L. Grigg, restoration architect; photographs, slides and drawings of grounds, buildings, and furnishings. The Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation was incorporated in 1923. In that year, the Foundation purchased Monticello and strove to restore and preserve the historic home. Now known as the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, the group operates the house, the gardens, the Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies, a museum shop, the Thomas Jefferson Center for Historic Plants, and the Monticello Visitors Center. The Harry Barton Architectural Drawings consists of seven blueprint drawings of the S. H. Tomlinson House, located at 403 Hillcrest Drive, High Point, North Carolina. These architectural drawings include floorplans, elevations, and building details, and they date from 1923-1924. Harry Barton was born in 1876 and died in 1937. He was an important North Carolina architect based in Greensboro. Barton worked in the Tudor Revival style for several residential designs. The Northup & O'Brien Architectural Records document the work of Northup & O'Brien, an architectural firm in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and its successors. The collection consists primarily of architectural drawings and job specifications, 1917-1980, as well as financial material, 1917-1956. The drawings represent the variety of projects undertaken by Northup & O'Brien in Winston-Salem as well other locations across the state, including residences, businesses, hospitals, schools, churches, and public and educational buildings. Most of the drawings are original, and characterize the different kinds of materials used for architectural drawing over the twentieth century. The firm of Northup & O'Brien was established in Winston-Salem by Willard Close Northup and Leet Alexander O'Brien in 1916. The partnership and its successor firms designed and constructed buildings in Winston-Salem and throughout North Carolina, as well as outside the state. In addition to residences--particularly fine homes--the partnership also specialized in commercial structures, schools, hospitals, churches, and municipal, county, and state government buildings. The Fieldcrest Mills records primarily contain building plans, site plans, elevations, sections, details, structural and electrical systems drawings and engineering plans for Fieldcrest Mills. These plans are related to a variety of textile mill warehouses located in Leaksville, Spray, and later Eden, North Carolina. Fieldcrest Mills was a Marshall Fields Company that produced an assortment of textiles including blankets, bedspreads, towels, bed sheets, bath accessories, bath rugs, rugs and furniture coverings; their warehouses were located in Draper, Leaksville and Spray, North Carolina. These three towns combined in 1967 to become Eden, North Carolina. The company changed in 1986 when Fieldcrest Mills merged with Cannon Mills of Kannapolis, North Carolina, becoming Fieldcrest Cannon, Inc. The Robert Burns Architectural Drawings include nine architectural drawings by Robert Paschal Burns (1933-2005) that were transfered from the College of Design to Special Collections through the assistance of Dean Marvin Malecha. They include a set of 4 drawings of an international airport from 1957 that Burns had submitted for the 44th Paris Prize in Architecture. He won the competition and studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. To support his international travel, Burns had been awarded the Lloyd Warren Fellowship in 1957 while he was a student at North Carolina State College. The collection also includes 3 undated drawings for an apartment hotel development in Raleigh and 2 undated drawings for a Highway Island Development (these last two are likely by Burns, but his name is not on the drawings). This collection also contains slides from Burns' classes, studio and architectural travel. Professor Robert Paschal Burns (1933-2005), a native of Roxboro, North Carolina, was the head of the Architecture Department at NC State University's School of Design from 1967 to 1974 and from 1983 to 1991. He was selected as a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 1979 and was awarded the Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal for Excellence in 1996. The Leif Valand Architectural Papers consists of architectural drawings and small number of related items (correspondence, awards, and others). The blueprints of St. Ambrose Episcopal Church are of particular significance; Valand designed this African-American church in 1963. There is also a set of blueprints (18) for house plan types for Cameron Village. There are nine blueprints and one architectural drawing dating from 1951 of Mr. Everett Case's residence located in Cameron Village, Raleigh, North Carolina. Everett Case (1900-1966) was the North Carolina State University basketball coach from 1946 to 1964. Case led the Wolfpack to win nine straight conference titles in his first nine years, six straight Southern Conference titles, and four Atlantic Coast Conference titles. Leif Valand (1915-1985) was a prominent Raleigh architect from the late 1940s to the 1970s. He was born in Norway and immigrated to New York as a boy. Valand attended the Pratt Institute in New York City and then practiced architecture in Scarsdale, New York, prior to moving to Raleigh in the late 1940s to work on the Cameron Village Shopping Center. In his heyday, Valand was the most prolific architect in Raleigh. Some of his other works include the Cameron Village Office Buildings and Apartments, Enloe High School, the Federal Building on New Bern Ave, North Ridge Country Club, North Hills Shopping Center, the Velvet Cloak Hotel, the Central Raleigh YMCA, the State Administration Building, St. Michael's Episcopal Church, the Raleigh Women's Club, and many private residences. The MacMillan and MacMillan Architectural Papers, 1919, 1950-2010, document the professional activities of Dan and Frank MacMillan and their architectural firm. The collection consists of architectural drawings with various iterations of designs, blueprints, construction documents, prospective elevations, technical drawings, and related materials. MacMillan and MacMillan’s projects include mostly private residences, with a small number of subdivision developments. Also included in the collection are drawings of landscape architecture projects by Richard C. Bell, done in collaboration with MacMillan and MacMillan projects. There is also a series of photographs from the period (1950-1952) in which the Dorton Arena was under construction; Dan MacMillan worked on the Dorton Arena as a project engineer for Muirhead Construction. Dan (1921- ) and Frank (d. 1991) MacMillan were born in Fayetteville, North Carolina and were principals in the MacMillan and MacMillan architectural firm. Dan MacMillan graduated from North Carolina State University in 1948 and worked for several years with the architect Jim Webb and then as a project engineer for Muirhead Construction on Raleigh’s Dorton Arena. In 1952 Dan MacMillan founded his firm, Dan MacMillan Architect and Associates in Fayetteville. After his brother, Frank, received his architecture license in the early 1950s Dan partnered with him and the firm was renamed MacMillan and MacMillan. Frank MacMillan died in 1991. Raymond Cecil Sawyer (1925-2018) was a modernist architect, who practiced mainly in North Carolina. After graduating from N.C. State College's School of Design, Sawyer worked with Alfred Lublin in Norfolk, Virginia, and with Owen Smith and Jim Webb before returning to Raleigh to work with Terry Waugh, becoming an associate and then partner. When Waugh returned to the faculty of the NC State University School of Design, Sawyer formed his own private practice, designing homes and other buildings. Sawyer worked on numerous projects at NC State University, including the University Theater. He also worked on projects around North Carolina, designing the Historic Bath Visitor Center and the gunboat cradle for the CSS Neuse, a Confederate ship in Kinston, North Carolina. He designed projects for Campbell University, Hillyer Memorial Christian Church, and, as a member of the North Carolina Medical Care Commission, designed hospital units throughout the state. The C. Frank Branan Architectural Drawings, 1924-1976, contains architectural drawings created or received by C. Frank Branan. Included are blueprints and tracings. Buildings represented include residences designed by Branan and located in Florida and North Carolina. The collection also contains plans for some buildings designed by other architects, such Crampton and Deitrick, for whom Branan once worked. While the materials span the time period 1924-1976, most documents date from 1949 to 1968. Also included are architectural drawings of C. Frank Branan's own residence in Raleigh. C. Frank (Cicero Franklin) Branan was born in 1922, and he grew up in Sanford, Florida. He graduated from the University of Florida in 1942. He practiced architecture in Daytona Beach, Florida, before relocating to Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1955 when he joined the architectural firm of William H. Deitrick (later Guy Crampton and Associates). Branan later became consulting architect for the State of North Carolina in the Office of Historic Preservation, retiring in 1990. The Leslie N. Boney Architectural Papers document the work of Wilmington, North Carolina, architects Leslie N. Boney Sr., and Leslie N. Boney Jr. from projects done in conjunction with architect James F. Gause in the 1920s through projects of Boney Architects, Inc., in the 1980s. Educational institution plans make up a significant portion of the project files in this collection, representing schools from the elementary through university levels. The firm's architectural projects also include churches, banks, residences, offices, libraries, and retail establishments. The vast majority of these buildings are located in North Carolina, especially in the eastern part of the state, though a small number of South Carolina projects are included as well. These project files include correspondence, inspection reports, drawings, blueprints, project specifications, photographs, contracts, and bid data and forms. Personal papers of Leslie N. Boney Sr., make up a small part of this collection, and include copies of textiles, chemistry, and English exams dating from 1901 to 1903, belonging to Leslie N. Boney Sr., C. L. Creech, and O. Max Gardner. A copy of Boney Sr.'s account of the 1901 fire that destroyed NC State University's original Watauga Hall, as printed in the 1903 Agromeck, is also included. North Carolina native Leslie N. Boney Sr. (1880-1964) graduated from the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) in 1903 with a degree in textile engineering. Boney joined Wilmington architect James F. Gause as a partner in practice in 1918, then took over the practice in 1922, upon Gause's retirement. Boney's eldest son, Leslie N. Boney Jr. (1920-2003), joined his father's practice after graduating from the College of Engineering at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering. Boney Jr. served in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II, earning the rank of major, and returned to his family's architectural practice following the war. Boney Jr. was a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, served as president of North Carolina's chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and was a recipient of North Carolina State University's prestigious Watauga Medal in 1996. Alexander residence in Forest Hills, a residential district in Durham, North Carolina; and architectural blueprints of a residence in Hope Valley, a suburb of Durham, North Carolina. George Watts Carr, Sr. (1893-1975) was a Durham, N.C., architect. After heading the Durham office of architects Northup and O'Brien from 1926 to 1927, he had his own practice in the same city. He was primarily responsible for projects that his firm produced in the Durham area, especially in the Forest Hills neighborhood. The James N. Sherrill Architectural Drawings contain the architectural drawings of James N. Sherrill from 1956 to 1968 with most buildings located in Hickory, North Carolina but a few in other locations such as Blowing Rock, North Carolina, and Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Most of the drawings are for homes and residences of local families. However, one set shows the drawings for the Addition to Gardner Hall at North Carolina State of the University of North Carolina at Raleigh in 1964. James N. Sherrill was an American Institute of Architects (AIA) architect who was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in 1925. He graduated from Reynolds High School in 1943 and spent three years in the Navy before beginning the Architectural Engineering program at North Carolina State University in 1946. He graduated from what became the School of Design in 1951. After interning for several Raleigh architects, he worked for Clemmer and Horton in Hickory, North Carolina, from 1953 to 1958. Four of his buildings designed while there won American Institute of Architects North Carolina (AIANC) awards. Sherrill started his own firm in 1958. He won another AIANC design award in 1962 for a Northwestern Bank branch in Hickory. He designed an addition to Gardner Hall (now Thomas Hall) on the North Carolina State University campus in 1965 that was completed in 1967. Sherrill passed away on 2012 May 9. Less

David Lose, FASLA, was the founder and President Emeritus of the Nashville-based firm Lose & Associates. Lose is known for his planning and implementation of public parks, greenways, and recreational areas. In 1968, he graduated from NC State's College of Design with a B.A. in Landscape Architecture. One of his more notable projects was the 125,000 acre Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area located on Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau. Other projects include Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area in Kentucky and Tennessee, and the Gateway Trail greenway system in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Lose was elected Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) in 1992, received many ASLA Excellence Awards, was a past chair of the National Recreation and Park Association Board of Trustees and also the Tennessee State Board of Architects, Engineers and Interior Designers. Peter Bochenek is a notable landscape architect in the Triangle region of North Carolina who has been in business since 1977. He received his Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from North Carolina State University, then his Master of Landscape Architecture from Harvard University.
