Information about greenways in the United States compiled by the North Carolina State University Special Collections staff in 1999-2000.
The records of the Greenways Survey document a survey initiated by the Evergreen Foundation and the Special Collections Research Center at NC State University Libraries in the summer of 1999 and continued in 2000. The formation of Greenways movements began in the 1980s as a result of a heightened awareness of the dwindling and misuse of the earth's resources. The need to conserve these natural resources kindled many grass roots organizations to protect the existing natural surroundings while at the same time transform decaying urban areas into greenways and other nature trails that local communities could enjoy again.
The records of the Greenways Survey contain only the answered survey form; additional information sent along by the organization returning the survey has been arranged and described as MC 294, International Greenways Resource Collection. The Greenways Survey was initiated in hopes of gathering resources beneficial to researchers interested in the history and creation of greenways and other urban design movements.
The Greenways Archive is an ongoing project to which additional material will be added as it is received.
