Harry Sheldon Welby, a consultant for pistachic culture for Standard Oil Company, from 1920 until at least 1952, was a graduate of the Biltmore Forest School. He was a member of the Northern Nut Growers Association, an organization seeking to develop better nut trees.

The Harry Sheldon Welby Diaries and Photograph contains two diaries written by Harry S. Welby in 1910-1912 and one photograph of Harry S. Welby and Dr. Carl A. Schenck circa 1911-1912. The content of the diaries range from discussions between Mr. Welby and Dr. Schenck on topics covering the forest industry to Mr. Welby's research of various types of wood specimens.

Biographical/historical note

Harry Sheldon Welby, a consultant for pistachic culture for Standard Oil Company, from 1920 until at least 1952, was a graduate of the Biltmore Forest School. He was a member of the Northern Nut Growers Association, an organization seeking to develop better nut trees.

Welby was born on December 30, 1890, in Southeast, New York. He lived in East Hampton, New York, until October 4, 1910, when he sailed for Germany with Biltmore Forest School. He graduated at Marshfield October 1911.

Welby was employed by C.A. Smith Lumber Co. in the mill and completed his thesis for F.E. on wood utilization. Between June and September 1912 he began temporary work with U.S.F.S cruising in Sierra National Forest. In 1916 he followed horticultural projects in the San Joaquin Valley.

On September 13, 1916, Welby was employed by Standard Oil Company Pipe Line Department, laying out camps and maintaining them as to flora. On July 13, 1917 he entered the Army with 10th Engineers (Forestry) and spent 17 months in service in France.

On June 30, 1925 he married Mary Barnes in Vanterra California. Mr. Welby and his wife Mary Barnes had two sons Charles W.Welby born October 9, 1926 and Robert B. Welby born April 2, 1929.

The Harry Sheldon Welby Diaries and Photograph contains two diaries written by Harry S. Welby in 1910-1912 and one photograph of Harry S. Welby and Dr. Carl A. Schenck circa 1911-1912. The content of the diaries range from discussions between Mr. Welby and Dr. Schenck on topics covering the forest industry to Mr. Welby's research of various types of wood specimens.
