Video games and controllers
are available for a 4-hour checkout, within the library, from the Learning
Commons Service Desk, first floor, East Wing, D. H. Hill Library.
The Learning Commons at the D. H. Hill Library is the result of an intensive
planning process that invited and implemented numerous recommendations from
university faculty and students. Those recommendations included support for
digital games to accompany the other varieties of multimedia support offered
in the library. The library also considered research findings about the study
habits of the current generation of students (“Millennials” or “Y Gen”) and
the educational benefits of gaming; the experiences of other libraries that
have created Learning Commons; and the fact that gaming is a growing part of
the curriculum and research at NC State (for example, see the NCSU Digital Games Research Center).
The D. H. Hill Library operates on a 24-hour schedule during the fall and spring semesters, and students have often expressed their desire to be able to spend long periods of time in the library with the opportunity to take breaks and play (chess, checkers, Cranium, and other board games are also available) and to be able to have something to eat and drink while studying. The majority of feedback that we continue to receive about access to games from students who use the Learning Commons has been extremely positive, both formally from students on the University Library Committee and Student Advisory Board and informally through comments to library staff.
Serious games and virtual online environments are being used for a growing range of educational purposes in many disciplines, such as those where three-dimensional visualization enables new kinds of computer-mediated learning experiences. Faculty and students at NC State are investigating the scientific, design, social, and educational challenges of creating games and game technologies. North Carolina is home to a cluster of leading game companies that offer excellent employment opportunities to graduates in these areas. The Libraries seeks to showcase this leading-edge research being done at NC State while helping to make students aware of the related educational and career opportunities.
The Learning Commons is a busy, interactive space. Of course, students also need space in the library for quiet study. There are many areas in the library that remain quiet throughout the day. For example, the new Special Collections Reading Room offers comfortable and attractive study tables and functions as a quieter area. There are also hundreds of quiet study seats in the bookstacks towers, many of which are equipped with computers offering the full suite of software applications that are available in the Commons.
