Overview
The City of Raleigh's Geographic Information Systems Division cooperates with Wake County GIS to maintain an extensive collection of data that is available for download and online mapping (IMAPS). Use one of the above links to access the most current data available for Raleigh or Wake County, NC.
More static data sets are available from the Geodata Server. These include Raleigh Planimetrics, Topography, Historic City Boundaries, and Orthophotos (discussed below).

Orthophotos
Orthophotographs of the City of Raleigh taken in 2006 and 2004 at a 6 inch resolution (see image below showing 2004 version) are available in MrSID format on the Geodata server in the /localgov/Raleigh/raleigh06 and raleigh04 folders or via ftp at ftp://gisdata.lib.ncsu.edu/localgov/Raleigh. Search for the image files you need using the index shapefile in the subfolder /index named orthoindex.shp. The images are projected via .sdw world files to NC StatePlane NAD83 feet.
A subset of these images covering NCSU's property (Main Campus, Centennial Campus, and outlying research farms) has been placed on the Geodata server under /campus/orth2006 and orth2004, or via ftp at ftp://gisdata.lib.ncsu.edu/campus. There is also an index shapefile named orthindx.shp in these folders.

Older Data
Data obtained in 1999 from the City of Raleigh is available in DXF format only on CD-ROM from Data Services.
Data obtained in 2001 is available on the Geodata server. Use the GIS Lookup link above to search NCSU Libraries' holdings.
Some shapefiles are broken up into city quadrants. DXF files are broken up into map tile areas.
Below is an illustration of the 'roads' layers as it is broken up into the four quadrants:
